I got a call right before 5 yesterday asking me to come in for an interview on Tuesday. Woo hoo!!! This time it's for a high school history position (US and World). This will be interview number 9 this year, but it's my first high school position (7 elementary and 1 middle school). Help! What sorts of questions will I get for a high school position that I haven't had yet? Thanks! Have a great weekend everybody :)

Good luck! I've had some interviews for high school positions when I only have experience with middle and elementary and the questions were very similar to any middle school interviews that I have had.

Go in with the expectation that you will have to hit the ground running- school starts now...show the interviewers that you have a plan for getting started right away, that you know the curriculum, and that you are passionate about your subject matter. Good luck. :)

    Congrats!!

I interviewed at a High School this past week. Here are some of the questions they asked me:

    Tell us about yourself.
What do you know about our school?
    What are your strengths? weaknesses?
Tell us about a time when a lesson went well. Why?
Tell us about a time when a lesson didn't go well. Why?
What would your students say about you?
What would your co-workers say about you?
What is your classroom management philosophy?
When would you call the parents?
Tell us your greatest moment you've had so far as a teacher?
    worst moment?

That's all I could remember! I know yo already know this, but come prepared with extra copies of your resume and supporting material, they really loved that I was prepared and organized.

    Good Luck!

I seem to remember questions relating to how I viewed high schoolers in general. After all, many students can look like adults. Remember that even though teens can look like adults they aren't yet.

Everything happening in their lives is happening for basically the first time, so they tend to dramatize things or overreact. This is natural. Don't minimallize what they are experiencing, but listen and show you genuinely understand.

High schoolers are so much fun!!

Awesome news!! Good luck! Since school is going on, I would second the notion of knowing what they are teaching if you can find it on the district website!!

I looked on the school website and found the sites for the other teachers teaching the same courses. I know what they are teaching and I'm hoping that if I get the job I'll start next Monday because that will be the start of new chapters in both courses.

I had one middle school interview and they asked a lot of questions about dealing with older students who refuse to do the work and when you refer them to the office. I'm worried since I student taught in elementary (1st and 3rd) that I'll be out of contention. I have lots of experience with kids pre-k to early middle school, but very little with high school. However, I do have experience with college kids (mostly freshman) so I'm hoping to spin some of that experience in the interview.

Good luck on your interview tomorrow! Don't worry about not knowing an answer to the question, just answer as honestly as you can :)

The interview went pretty well. They asked pretty generic questions about lesson planning and classroom management. I was able to answer each question completely and tried to include as many examples as possible. I was the last interview and they said they would decide today and contact references. They will contact me either way by Friday. Fingers crossed!!!

I got a call today (while sitting in substitute orientation for another district) asking me to come in for a follow up interview. I of course said yes. Now I'm wondering what they'll ask and why they're doing follow ups after the P said in the interview they would make their decision yesterday afternoon. So excited to know that they liked me well enough to call me back though :)

The followup may just be a formality--probably a meeting with the Superintendent or something. Good luck!!

I just got back from my follow-up. It turns out that they narrowed it down to one other candidate and me, but couldn't decide who would be the better fit. I met with the same people as Tuesday (P, AP, Dept Head) and they asked me only a few questions about how I will get students interested in history. It was very casual and it was very conversational. They were all smiling and nodding as I talked. They said they will call me tomorrow to let me know. I REALLY hope I get this one. I think I would be a great fit. Fingers crossed!!!

No word today. I'm hoping that it's because they haven't had time to check references since the second round was just yesterday. It will be a VERY long weekend waiting to hear.

I hadn't heard back yet so I sent an email to the P this afternoon and got back a reply that basically says they went with the other candidate (it was between 2 of us in the 2nd round) and they are checking her references and will finalize the decision by Wednesday. So my only hope at this point is that her references don't check out. Oh well, I'm really glad I kept applying while I was waiting. This is all so frustrating!!!!!!!! If this one other candidate hadn't applied the job would be mine. Arghh!!! I'm so sick of jub hunting.
