I just wanted to say- I don't always suck

Today was the first time I subbed back in my hometown. SOOO nice! (In high school, all my friends wanted to leave. I wanted to stay and teach and never leave!) I had third graders again, and they were totally fine.

The teacher was there doing DRAs all day, so she was in and out. She told me she had a very chatty class and they were difficult at times. Maybe 30 minutes into the day, they switched for ability grouped math. One kid came in and instantly tried goofing off. I quickly made it clear that he would not act this way and that I wouldn't put up with it. Unbeknownst to me, the teacher overheard the exchange. She came back during specials to ask me to write down my name so I could be put in her preferred list. She said too many subs are too afraid to discipline and she loved that I made my authority clear right away. (She actually told me that three different subs have had to get the principal to sit in the room for the day! One sub said she'd never come back! I told her that sub needed to go to the district that I was in last week!!) Overall, they were a bit chatty, but it was a super easy day.

In other news, I've been in a few impressive classrooms. One of these days I'm going to post the pictures.

You don't suck! You just had a rough class that wasn't yours. Glad you had a great day!

They aren't given the authority to discipline. That is the problem. Our school won't let them write detentions. They have to leave a note for me, then I decide if the child merits a detention. It's ridiculous!

Well done for using great behaviour management. I'm sure the students had a fun day with you as well.

Yeah.. Just read my post about being blocked district wide.
I was the one to discipline even the hardest 8-graders throughout 2 years without any referrals or teacher's help. Until I wrote couple referrals and made one verbal referral to the office.
My guess is those subs who are afraid of disciplining had faced some legal issues earlier, so now they are better safe than sorry.
