    Help!

We've just started doing a new thing... to tell you the truth, I'm not sure what they're calling it, because I was sick when they had the PD session on it, but it's essentially streaming. All the grade threes are being split into groups, based on high, medium, or low, and maybe in different areas (math/LA)... I'm not entirely sure how the groups were split up to be honest, all I know is that I am in charge of the "high-flyers". I am trying to mix it up, incorporating Math one week and LA another week. It happens for one hour every Thursday.

I have no problem doing enrichment activities in Math, but I struggle with Literacy/LA enrichment activities. Does anyone out there have any great ideas? I wouldn't classify this group as "gifted" (though I'm sure there are some who are) but these are the strongest students.

    :thanks:

How about some research activities with presentations as the final activity? Some thematic topic, with some kind of poster board presentation?

What about having students create a play around a central topic/idea they research? Or taking a well-known story and creating an alternate version/ending?

Comparing two or more fiction pieces based on a few elements and then creating one using the same elements.

    Comparing two nonfiction articles.

Using a nonfiction article to highlight their reading in their fiction.

Read and record short books for students in a younger grade.

Create movies to represent short books.

Thanks, everyone. Unfortunately, research is not possible due to our lack of computers.

I decided to take a small novel and have three chapters per group (so one group had chapters 1-3, group two had chapters 4-6, group 3 had chapters 7-9, and then the last group got chapters 10-13.)

Then they read their chapters, and then act out their chapters for the class, so that we can all see what happened throughout the story. It was definitely interesting. They didn't get to the acting part, but we'll do that next week!
