So, this year I had 2 World History and 3 World History Honors. 5 periods and 1 planning. Next year it's starting to look like this (no idea on which periods): 4 Regular American History 1 AP World History 1 Tourism Geography Right now, my ideas: Base most of the American History on compare/contrast based on movies. Ex. The Patriot vs. what we learned. Less rigor. Not so much lectures. AP World will obviously be rigorous. And the Tourism Geography will be loads of fun on learning all kinds of destinations. Videos, pictures, real life experiences will be the core.
Why did your schedule change from teaching 5 to teaching 6?? I have a tenative schedule of 1 section of AP Euro History 2 sections of World History 3 sections of World Geography I gave up AP US to teach AP Euro next year. I don't know about the number of sections of World History and World Geography - could be 2 world and 3 geo or 3 world and 2 geo.
I am teaching the same next year as this year--2 chemistry, 3 physics, 1 sub period, and a planning period. I am the swing person because I am the only one in my department certified in both chemistry and physics so it varies from year to year as to how many sections of each I have. I always tell them that I do not care what I teach as long as it is not freshmen. They tend to be too moody for me. I always teach 5 classes but if we teach 6 then we do not have a sub period and are paid extra for the extra prep.
I came in late before the year and ended up with a planning period. I "elected" for 6 periods (gives me a supplement). Basically, the demand required I take 6 periods. Dept. Head wants me to handle AP World and the Geography since he knows it'll be taught. Eventually, he'll pass on AP Euro to me that way I recruit from AP World (9th grade) into AP Euro (10th).
haven't got mine yet but I'll be the same as this year 9th global issues and 10th world civ..this year i have 4 world and 2 global with a planning..i'm guessing it may be the same as next year, since i'm the only one that teaches the 'regular' world ..well except for one teacher but not sure they will give her many core content classes...
The school I teach at is an academy school. Students are selected to enroll to get a general education and take courses toward an academy, such as engineering, arts, etc. One academy is the Tourism and Hospitality and one of the requirements is Destination: Geography. Basically, teaching the academy students how to become travel agents. Of course, it's more than learning how to book hotels and flights on Orbitz or Expedia. I would teach popular locations. KNOW the location you are recommending people. "I want to go to France." Students should know about the culture and locations. Paris and its many attractions, the Riviera (Nice, Monaco, etc). Remember to advise on the language and what would be necessary to have a good trip, like the currency exchange, etc. Lot of academic freedom for that course.
Some of my students in my World History classes got excited that I would be teaching and just dashed to their academy teacher to tell her and now she wants to meet to discuss it. I must admit I felt good when they became geared up for it since I would be teaching it. Of course, they loved it when I said they wouldn't be writing DBQs in that class.
After over 12 years on the block schedule we are changing our schedule to the a 6 period day in which the students take 7 classes one class dropping per day on a 7 day cycle. The teachers will be teaching 5 classes, but every core class will be all 4 terms. My schedule looks like this for next year: 1 Section: AP US History 1 Section: Western Civ. I CP 1 Section: US I Honors (pre AP) And if need be I will be teaching an additional section of AP Euro depending on enrollment in the class. This will leave me more time for my Department Chair duties, thank the lord!
I was a little surprised when I found out mine, but I received: 2 classes of AP English Literature 3 classes of Botany/Zoology 1 class of Molecular Biology/Microbiology I'm really going to enjoy that last class, because I can really teach whatever I want as long as it's science. Incidentally, they're having to tear down a wall in my classroom this summer so they can make it bigger and add lab tables. I was mad when I first moved to this room from across the hall, but now I'm going to be working with a room that's almost twice as big - yes! Though I'm sure they'll put one of those sliding walls in the middle for another teacher for when I don't teach different areas.
We're on a rotating A/B block. I'll have... 3 sections of Latin I 2 sections of Latin II H 1 section of combined Latin III H & Latin IV AP Next year will be my first teaching AP and I'm a little nervous. That exam is a killer!
Cassie, I think you'll love AP! The kids are really involved if they decide to take AP classes. I was so nervous when I first taught AP Biology (and I thought I fell flat), but the kids enjoyed it and I ended up enjoying it. And I even had a couple of 5's! I can tell from your postings on here that you're a wonderful teacher, so I expect plenty of 3's, 4's, and 5's from your AP Latin students! Good luck!
Period 1: AP US History (Everday) Period 2: Period 1 has this period on A-Days/Period 2 has this period of B-Days Period 3: AP US History (Everday) Period 4: AP World History (Everyday) Period 5: Prep Period 6: Lunch Period 7: Prep Period 8: Regents US History (Everyday) Period 9: Humanities Seminar (Every other day) (Topic unknown) That's if we stick with an A/B Day Schedule (which I hope we do!).
All I know for sure is that I'm teaching a year round block of ESL. My other 3 blocks are likely to be a combination of English IV Modified and College Prep English II. I was thrilled when I found out because as a first-year teacher admist budget cuts, I was a little wary of whether or not I'd have my contract renewed!
I am amazed that you know what your schedule will be next year. My school hasn't even register students yet. It is a small school. They don't have to tell us our schedule here until July 15. I do know however that I will be teaching Spanish and English. Exactly how many classes of what and when it completely up in the air!
1st period - Honors US 2nd period - World History 3rd period - US 4th period - US Lunch 5th period - prep aka extended lunch 6th period - Honors US Ending the day with the honors class is the way to go. I go home happy. I must say the schedule is pretty awesome. Life is good.
An edit to my schedule since I will have a planning period now. 3 Regular American History 1 AP World History 1 Destination: Geography I figured with getting my Masters, I'll need that planning period since it proved to be very useful this year.
That must be nice to know your schedule already!! We don't even know if we'll have the same principal next year. I teach in a small district also and they just let the elementary principal go last night so we'll see what happens.
tentatively, I will have: psychology ap euro world civilizations if I get the euro, it will be my first time teaching it... doh.
Brendan, could you tell me why your school switched from block schedule to a more traditional schedule? We're on a block...
Basically becuase it saved money over 300 K, saved us from teacher cuts, and for our first semester Biology/US History kids it would be hard to pass the MCAS in June after not having the course for a few months and next year the passing of both will be graduation requirments. I am not for the schedule at all, while though it does make all my courses full year courses and the course only rotates out once out of a 7 day cycle, my AP courses loose about 25 minutes of instructional time a day.
Period 1 - Honors U.S. History Period 2 - Hall Duty (Semester 1)/Study Hall (Semester 2) Period 3 - Honors U.S. History Period 4 - Honors U.S. History Period 5 - Prep Period 6 - Lunch Period 7 - Regents U.S. History Period 8 - Regents U.S. History Period 9 - Honors U.S. History Period 10 - AIS (Only selected students have this period - - AIS)

So nuts to hear how you moved away from the block. Our school is looking at budget issues now too.... thinking of a modified block. I really like teaching on the block,... hoping nothing will change.
I subbed on a block schedule during a maternity leave. Our AP courses (at least a few of them that i know of) are on a block format. I liked it-less times I have to repeat myself on a subject! HAHA
All that I know is I will be teaching Biology...and possibly another class. Won't know until the summer...but, I'm soooo glad to get out of my current school!
HistoryTeaching: 10th Period is only for students enrolled in AIS classes. A student following a normal schedule leaves at the normal time. However, if an upperclassman wishes to take an additional period and the class is available, they can take a 10th period. Normal Schedule: School Starts at 7:20, Ends at 2:05 With 10th Period: Starts at 7:20, Ends at 2:50
jbj, good luck on teaching AP World. I took the class this year and it was RIGOROUS. Its been a real challenge for the teacher and the students, but amazingly rewarding. I'm just a student-wannabee-teacher at this point, but here's my schedule for next year (I'm gonna be a junior, wish me luck x_x) AP U.S. History (from everything I've heard, its cake next to AP World.) English 3 honors(after the by the books, cut and dry, shakespeare and grammer type teacher I've had this year, I'm really hoping for something a little more on the creative side) Algebra 2 honors (zzzz) Chemistry honors (I've heard the teacher is a funny guy, who has no clue what he's doing as a teacher) Fine arts (I really, really wish this wasnt a required course -_- huge waste of my time) Religion 3 (Catholic school If a can get another objective style class I wont mind too much) Art 1/2 (I've wanted to take art since forever, and the teacher is really amazing. Gonna savor every drop of this one.)
