We've all been sharing in each other's frustrations, so I thought I'd share my good news, too. It's a 40-minute commute each way (when I live right in the middle of a zillion schools...) and pays less than comparable jobs, but the bottom line is that it's what I wanted and they gave it to me.

I'm getting excited -- this will be my first job as a certified teacher!

I don't like giving away too much info online, but just to satisfy your curiosity... ;) I'm doing resource room in a private school. Which is an interesting change of pace from classroom teaching, but I think I need something less intense in my life right now anyway.

And Alice -- I don't think so... they seemed pretty desperate... <shrug>

Come on, you and I both know the stats: there are at least several hundred applicants for every single education job in this state. And I'm pretty sure I'm lowballing it.

They may have been desperate to get YOU in there. They were not desperate to get someone in there.

Actually, I think they really were desperate, I think it's a matter of looking in different places. Someone introduced me to this agent who matches up educators with places that need them, and he had a whole caseload for me right away! He barely asked any questions except "When can you start"! Apparently there is need, but you have to be willing to be flexible. For instance, this job pays fairy well and will probably be considerably less taxing than classroom teaching, but it goes by the hour so it's not considered full time and there are no insurance benefits, tenure, retirement -- nothing. Thankfully that is fine with me right now because I'm still in grad school and living with my parents, so I'm able and willing to make that trade-off of having less stress and no benefits.

But anyway, I think most people are applying for full-time teaching jobs, especially in the public schools because the department of education here really has the best deal locally as far as I can tell. I'll be trying for one of those again in 2010... at least by then I'll have more on my resume instead of another year spent only jobhunting!

Thanks so much, guys. You're really helping me get excited about this, I'm barely nervous anymore and can't wait to start! :) (more nervous about the commute now than the job... I've never had to drive to work every day, what do you do when sleep-deprived? And my interview was midday, I reckon it takes longer at rush hour... Sigh.)

Good for you! Congrats! I commuted to a job before and thought I would hate the drive but it ended up being good thinking time. I'd review my day, think ahead or just decompress. I also listened to books on tape. I was also a resource teacher coming from a classroom and loved it. You now will be able to use the restroom!

    Good luck!

Bored, when do you start? If I recall, weren't you one who was teaching in a school with a different calendar? Is your new school similar?

I had an hour long commute once. It wasn't that bad. It was "me" time. I usually just turned up my favorite music real loud and had a grand old time singing along. I also used the time to plan out my day, and think about everything I needed to get done.

    Congratulations!!!!

I have a 50 minute commute and I wouldn't trade my job for one closer! The commute is a drag sometimes, but it is so worth it. Get XM radio and start borrowing books on tape from the library. I am so happy for you. :thumb:
