My school acquired a set of 30 chromebooks for junior high this year, and I'd like to be able to take advantage of them. I have a plan I'd really like to work out, but I'm having tons of issues with it. The Objective: I would like to set up a regular, repeating (weekly) assignment so that students can complete it in google docs (rather than with pen/paper). Creating a single doc and then sharing it with all students wouldn't work; they all need an individual document that only they can edit. What I've tried so far: I've created individual student folders in my Drive account, and my intent was to make several copies of the same doc (the assignment template) and then drag-and-drop one copy into each folder. Then I would share each student's folder with them. Each week, I would add a new doc to their folder (which they'd already have access to, since I would have already shared their folder with them), so that I wouldn't have to share a new doc with each student every week. First, I had a problem when I realized it's impossible to make multiple copies of the same document. For some reason, this needs to be done one at a time. Then I thought I solved the problem when I found a code that would allow me to make multiple copies of a doc. Unfortunately, those copies are only accessible via docs.google.com - they're not showing up on my drive page (where I go when I go to drive.google.com), and I can't find a (convenient) way to transfer them to the appropriate folder. Currently, what I have to do is this: open the doc, click the "move to folder..." icon, click through to get to the appropriate subfolder, and click "move" in a dialog box that pops up asking me if I'm SURE I want to move this. Dragging and dropping would be much easier, but I can't find a way to do that. Question: Is there a way I can do this that is less time-consuming and tedious? I'm open to scrapping my individual student folders plan as long as I can find a way to create a doc that I can already access (so students can't "forget" to share it with me) and make sure that students all end up with individual docs that only they can edit. I feel like I generally have a pretty good grasp on tech stuff, but I can't get a handle on this! Any suggestions would be amazing.
Yes, but then they'd all be able to edit the same document. So it would be 11-26 students (depending on the class) trying to edit one doc at a time. I want (need) them to all have their own individual document that only they can edit.
You could share the document "Can View" instead of "Can Edit". The students could then do their work on a new document that they could share with you.
Yes, that might work! In a perfect world, I'd like to have them working on a document that is pre-shared with me, but I think I'd be willing to sacrifice that for the sake of convenience. Thanks!
I'll check with our "Google Docs Guru" at school tomorrow--she's out tonight or I'd check in with her now.
Consider looking into the free version of Instructure Canvas. It is amazing. http://www.canvaslms.com/try-canvas Our school has the paid version now. I use GoogleDocs with teachers, but find it never does exactly what I want when I've tried to use it in the classroom. Except for GoogleForms - love those little boogers for quizzes and such.
You could share it as "can view" and require students to duplicate it then share it with you. Or you could create something similar in Google forms- that's what I prefer to do.
Teach them to make a copy and rename it themselves. I push out a doc to my 5th graders, and they can then make themselves a copy and rename it, then share the copy with me. Depending on the assignment, have you tried using Google Forms?
Look into Google Classroom - it will give a copy of an assignment that you create to each student to fill out and it keeps track of when assignments were turned in to you, you can write feedback with a grade through it, and they cannot share their work with other students
As BioAngel said, if you have Google Apps at your school you can use Google Classroom to create an assignment for each individual student and recopy the assignment each time. If you don't have Google Apps at your school, then the best way would be to have them make a copy of a single document each time you want them to use it, and maybe place it into a shared folder for that assignment with their names in the document title.
You did a lot of prep work creating folders for your students. It would have saved you time if you had students create their own folder (named the way you want) and share that with you. Whatever they drag into the folder is viewable by you. As for your assignment: You can create a template of that document in googledocs. You can share that link with your students. (They can search for it as well) They cannot modify that, they have to choose to "use this template" and a copy will automatically be made for them.
I agree. I used Google Classroom a lot when I was teaching 2nd grade last year. You can create a document that everyone can edit, or it can create a new document for each student, and it puts their name on it. It's really easy for them to turn it in also, so they don't have to share it with you.
I wish Google Classroom was around when I was teaching. My teachers are in love with it! We are 1:1 (Chromebooks) in my district, so Google Classroom makes life so much easier for teachers!
