Can anyone recommend some great murder mystery books? I need a new author with a series to start reading. I currently am reading Charlaine Harris and I am waiting for her to come out with new books. I am reading them faster than she can write! I like books a little on the dark side.

Have you read Preston and Child? The Pendergast series (starting with Relic) is great and those books have a definite dark side.

Barbara Michaels (most of these have paranormal elements and suspense)/ Elizabeth Peters, Sara Paretsky, John Sandford, Kathy Reichs

I can probably think of some more later.

How about (early) Laurell K. Hamilton? I love the Anita Blake series up through Obsidian Butterfly. After that she seems to have eliminated things like plot in favor of hundreds of pages of boring sex scenes. If you like vampire romance/romantic suspense, Sherrilyn Kenyon's books are fun.

I love all of the Elizabeth George books. They are set in England and are good, solid stories. She is a great writer. Some titles include: Playing For the Ashes, In Pursuit of the Perfect Sinner, Missing Joseph, A Place for Hiding, A Traitor to Memory.

    Enjoy!

If you like a little humor with your murder mysteries, try Anne George. She is a southern writer. Her 2 main characters in each book are older sisters. They bicker like the two older gals in Steel Magnolias.

If you don't mind the whimsical element of animals talking to each other, try Rita Mae Brown's Sneaky Pie series. I also like Earlene Fowler, and most of Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum books - the first four are really good, and funny, too!

I have read those books! They are a hoot.
I love mystery series like the Cat Who... books, the Sneaky Pie Brown books, Stephanie Plum books, M.C. Beaton/Agatha Raisin novels and a bunch I can't think of right now. There's always the old standby...Dame Agatha Christie!

Patricia Cornwell is another one I liked. It took me a while to remember her name, it has been years since I read any of her books. They are good... LONG but good.

I love books by Stuart Woods. :D I've read all his mysteries & they are great!!! He has a few that are in a series so you can follow the characters too if you're into that sort of thing. I've begun reading Mariah Stuart and like her books also.

Tami Hoag is wonderful! She has a series of books that are an excellent read! Murder, mystery, some love/romance, but its not a cheesy love, murder, mystery book if that makes sense! :)

I am currently reading a book that I purchased at COSCO last week called 'Sail'. It's by James Patterson & Howard Roughan. I've read some of Patterson's books before. I wasn't sure what to get since it's been awhile that I've been able to just read for luxury. What attracted me to the book was that one of the reviews called it a 'winning beach read', was a thriller, and made it to #1 NY Times BestSeller.

I will have to look at some of the suggestions here for I suspect I will be finished in no time with this book.

    I love murder mysteries!

On a regular basis, I read:

    James Patterson
    Tami Hoag
    Iris Johanson
    Lisa Jackson
    Jeffery Deaver
    Robin Cook (medical murder mysteries)
    Michael Parker (medical murder mysteries)
Robert Ludlum (historical murder mysteries - usually WWII or Cold War)
Mariah Stewart (very quick reads, but still pretty good...)
    Mary Higgins Clark

Most of those are pretty easy reads, some with a little romance thrown in.

She doesn't write murder mystery books, but if you haven't ever read Jodi Picoult's books I highly recommend them; she is one of my favorite authors!

Casey Daniels writes a series that includes ghosts. I like them. I also like Elaine Viets, Carolyn Hart, Linda Johnston's pet-sitter mysteries, James Rollins' adventure books, and a bunch of others- need to look at authors' names.

I second Iris Johanson but I LUURVE J.D. Robb aka Nora ROberts. They are the ....In Death series, like Naked in Death, Sacred in death etc.... They are set in the near future and feature a cop named Eve Dallas and her super rich, super sexy Irish husband Roarke. They are funny, interesting and full of mystery.

The Cabinet of Curiosities by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child was an excellent murder mystery thriller that I read some years ago.

Also, if you like that show Murder She Wrote, the books are good too. The authors are Jessica Fletcher and Donald Bain.
