Hi everyone, I'm just finishing up my credential and M.A. in Education and beginning my job search for the Fall. I have been focusing primarily on Elementary education, but my B.A. is in English and my former career was as a literary manager in the film business. I recently attended a Job Fair in which two districts said they would hire me as a High School English teacher based on my resume/background. I hadn't thought of that before, but now that I am thinking about it, I think I like the idea. How is it out there in the high school world, generally speaking? Thanks for any thoughts.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE it! This is my 21st year. Some days are long, and some periods last forever, but the years seem to fly by. And, from what I understand the job situation in CA is very similar to the one here. If you've gotten two more-or-lessoffers, I'm thinking you should follow up and give them a shot. If you hate HS, you can always bump down next year-- with contacts in a district and a year of experience under your belt.
The job market's less tight in single subjects than in multiple subjects, that's for sure. Do I infer correctly that the credential you've just finished up is multiple subjects? In that case, you'll need a single subject authorization, or whatever it is that that's being called these days: see http://www.ctc.ca.gov/credentials/CREDS/add-cred-auth.html, and go have a chat with the people at your school of ed. You might also need to take CSET English, though I don't know that for sure.
This is my first year and I love it! I wouldn't change it for the world. I love teenagers and I guess you have to have that passion to love it. If you do, I don't think you will be disappointed.
I am teaching high school and I am very happy in this environment. High school students definately have their fair share of issues, but there will be pros and cons to any grade level you teach.
I teach high school and middle school and I absolutely love it. I enjpy going to work everyday (well most :>)
One of the two people I spoke with said something about the MS working for that particular district. I had previously contemplated taking the CSET in English and adding the additional course necessary for single subject. I think I will definitely do that now. It couldn't hurt. Thanks for all your input!
