Quick question... I recently graduated from college. I have been applying for both teaching and non teaching jobs. I've been thinking about getting a full time job, either retail or food service, and subbing on my time off until I can get a full time teaching job. Is there anyone else doing the same thing? I know that there is no guarantee that you will have a job everyday when you sub.
Lots of subs in my area have other, regular jobs. I think it's a good idea, especially given that there is probably a huge number of subs in the sub pool these days. Just keep in mind that you'll want to make sure that your work schedule will allow you to sub at times. Like, if you have a regular, 9-5 job, you won't be available for sub jobs.
Retail or food service would probably be good options because chances are you would work both weekend days (assuming a five day work week), which would leave two days open during the week for subbing. Or you could see about getting something where you work evening or night hours.
If I was young and had the energy, I would consider having another full-time job as a backup. But, the other side is that I really need to sub - because it's my only job - so I've had to stay motivated to go out and make contacts, which is why I keep working pretty regularly. I do have a part-time job on some weekends and holidays.
I started subbing the next month after graduating w/ my BA, but I've had a part-time non-teaching job for many yrs too along w/ it. Subbing was always the priority over my other job because it pays more, then I always worked my 2nd job starting at 4:30 or so until 9:30pm or so on M-F & any hrs on the weekends. I've been pretty blessed for most of my subbing yrs to have long-term assignements, so quite often, I knew what days & hrs I'd be working ahead of time. But I've NEVER had a full time 40 hrs a week job along w/ subbing. The most I've ever worked a wk along w/ subbing was 20-25 hrs.
I have a job waitressing around 30ish hours per week, and then I am also a sub. I am usually there around 5 days a week. Basically they know that I am a sub but they said they couldn't give me all evening shifts, so they set up my schedule where I am able to sub around 3 days a week, which I am completely fine with. I used to be just a sub, but I wasn't able to get subbing 5 days a week since our sub pool is HUGE (over 500 subs). I make more having two jobs anyway since I make a decent amount as a waitress.
I sub and work a 2nd job in retail while I am in school to get a degree in child development. The retail job is not full time, but its still good hrs I work 5-10pm everynight that I work sometimes more on sat. and usually work 4 days a weeks.
I do the same. I have a full time teaching job and I sub on the side. They called during my vacation week and another time, which I made into a "my day off", and pulled it. It's pretty cool. I spent the extra $$ on some Christmas gifts. Rebel1
I am not a regular teacher and most likely wouldn't become one since I'd have to move to another city and trying geting a full time teachign job there. If you plan to get into teaching, continue subbing even when you get a non teaching job. If necessary, sign up with more than one district.
I have a permanent sub position I report to every day. I also work 5 nights a week as a server at a local restaurant. I'm lucky enough to receive health benefits from the restaurant. I'm extremely tired. Hopefully I don't have to do this next year. 14 hour days are getting old.
