For those who have taken the test previously, can you give me a recommendation for a study guide? I am planning on taking both English 6-12, and English 5-9. I skimmed through this thread, but didn't really notice any particular study guide mentioned. I appreciate it!

The answer depends on what it is that concerns you and your learning style. But you might want to have a look at the threads for other states' single subject English tests; in particular, there are some useful goodies for download in "Elmer's English resources".

    Study Guide

Hi! I am new to this site, but I have found great encouragement reading these posts. I realize that this post is over a year old but I would LOVE a copy of the study guide you created! Hope all is well!:)

Welcome, DramaLady! You might want to look at the glossaries and related matter in our thread "Elmer's English resources"; the original goodies were pulled together by a taker of California's CSET English, but the differences among teacher tests tend to be on the surface.

    Losing confindence in a hurry...

So, I am studying, studying, studying. I was initially scheduled to take the exam this Friday, but I just don't feel prepared. The questions that continue to stump me revolve around "what would be the best activity for this situation." One of the questions I looked at last night had three answers that were all considered "the best" option depending on the book/source. I feel like I am finally mastering all of the edu-speak and jargon (I currently teach at a university---not alot of jargon there,) but the strategies are eluding me. I can find no universal set of strategies, yet those that create the exam must be taking their information from somewhere. HELP!!!

Oh and the two study guides I have worked with are the XAM and the REA. Both very different.

It's difficult - especially if you don't have an education background or experience in a k-12 classroom. Just remember when you come across those questions that you need to look at everything as student-centered. What is the best, most engaging, enriching experience for the student?

Also remember you have a "perfect" classroom - students are angels, money no problem, resources no problem, etc.

Did you download the guide from the state? It's tiny and not so much a study guide as a mini-practice test, but it will help you get more comfortable with the question-style.

    Thank you!

I do have the state's guide as well as two others. They have been helpful, and, I am probably over-thinking alot of the questions.

I do need to remember that all situations presented take place in ideal conditions. That was a great tip. Thank you.

I am talking classes in an alternative certification program right now. Some of this we've covered in class. Some is yet to come. Also, our instructor is actually current secondary teacher and is more interested in practice than theory, which will help us once we are in the classroom, but isn't much help for the exam---which we must pass to get into the classroom. Catch 22.

I am currently reading Wong's "First Days of School" and plan to dig into "Engaging Adolescents in Reading" and " Stategies that Work" before my exam next week. I also intend to take another practice exam or two and study any areas of weakness. Keep your fingers crossed for me!

Thank you for your support! I don't know what I would do without this site!

    Hi everyone,
This is my first post. I'll be taking English 6-12 on Tuesday 6/16. I'm just going to approach it with an open mind.
DramaLady, what classes are you taking in your alternative certification program?

I am enrolled in EPI (Educator's Preparation Institute.) We take one class per month with in-class and on-line components. Right now we are finishing up our Reading class. Past courses include: Technology, Classroom Management, Instructional Stategies, and Teaching and Learning. I will be done with all of my course work (seven segments in all) at the end of September. This program is state funded and I believe most community colleges offer it. You can find out more on the FDOE site.

    Dramalady,
Do you think if you have college credits in any of those courses they would be transferred?

Did you do the exam online? I thought you would have gotten an unorricial score immediately after. How was the exam?

    EPI transfers

Yes, they would be. There should be a form that you fill out to obtain transfer credit, depending on which EPI program you attend. I would find a program near you and contact someone. New groups should be starting in August. :)

    Advice to tryingtoteachfl

    Hi tryingtoteachfl,

I studied the XAM and REA guides for FTCE English 6-12. While the sample tests are different from one another, the information is good...sans the typos. The Elmer's Guide documents available on this site are great for brushing up on technical terms. As for the edu-jargon, "Strategies That Work" By Harvey and Goudvis was great as was "Engaged in Learning: Teaching English 6-12" by Kathleen and James Strickland. I found these at my local library. Maybe you can too! Good luck! I'm sure you'll do well! :thumb:

Congratulations to you for passing the test. I have been studying my prep guide and writing sample essays. I passed both sample tests and trust me, the samples are not easy!!! I keep praying and studying for this test. I need to pass this test for job security. I am taking my exam by computer. Will I find out my scores at the end of the test or days after?

    Thanks and congratulations again!

    Tryingtoteach,

Because there is only one score for the test (the essay is not independent), it might take up to two weeks; however, my score was posted on the internet (under my account for FTCE) 8 days after I took the exam. I received the official score in the mail 3 days later. It just depends on the scoring process for the essay and how many others took the test during the same time window as you.

Good luck and I'm sure you'll do very well!
    :)
