I've been doing Friendship Salad for a couple of years now and I just love it. My kiddos love it and it also provides a good snack for the 1st day of school.

I start by reading That's What a Friend Is by Pat Hallinan. Then I begin assembling the salad. This year I'm looking for ways to expand the activity. I want a little something to send home with students to spark a conversation at home. Also, I'd like to do an art/writing activity to display for Back to School Night.

    Does anyone have any ideas?

Love that idea. Can you tell me more about the Friendship Salad?

When I do the Friendship Salad, we put all the good fruit into a big bowl and talk about what a good friend and classmate should be. Then I try to put a bad banana (a banana that is black and rotten) in the fruit salad and of course they don't want that. I then tell them that a bad banana is like someone who does not follow the rules and is not a good friend. Just like the bad banana would ruin the fruit salad, a bad banana in our class could ruin our day.

So maybe you could do an art project with a banana theme.

I also do this every year! I LOVE it. I use an 'rotten apple' instead of a banana (really doesn't matter what kind you use), and talk about how just one rotten apple can ruin the goodness for all the rest of the fruit. They seem to really understand the analogy.

Hmmmm I haven't ever done a craft/writing activity around it?..... I will think about it and let you know if I come up with any brilliant ideas!

The next day you could start an interactive writing piece on the friendship salad.

What a GREAT idea! We do friends and community as a first 6 weeks unit in my district. As a first year teacher, this is really helpful. Thanks!

How about if you do the rotten apple idea that you have them draw/write themselves following a class rule on a "good" apple..... and them make it into a bulletin board.... might steal this ;)

TLC art has a fruit bowl. Maybe you could add a sentence at the bottom like "No rotten bananas in this class" or something?

    Rotten Apple

I like the idea of changing it to a rotten apple. That could tie in with the apple/Back to school theme we do for Aug/Sept.

Does anyone have a copy of the TLC fruit bowl? That might be something simple for them to do.

Thanks for the ideas, keep them coming!
