    Blick's Pick: Starkly beautiful

This is a bit longer than most of my picks, but I think is well worth the time. You'll have a new appreciation for the beauty, the emptiness, and fauna of the arctic regions. Wolves, foxes, hares, yaks, and polar bears all make appearances, along with the photographer pulling his sledges and crawling through the snow to catch just the right angle. Some neat optical affects caused by differences in air temperature also show up several times in the video

For any science teachers using Scholastic Science World magazines, the January 2016 issue has an excellent article with skill sheets on the the double hand transplant that was done on an 8 year old boy. If you are located on the East Coast, this is a lesson that can be so much more. The surgery was done at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, changing the feeling of interesting science to a more local and relatable feeling. In addition, I am adding a link to the Youtube video that contains the longer video with more of this amazing patients own words and personality shining through, produced by CHOP. It is about 13 minutes in length, with more science, more explanation, and a jumping off point for the teacher to discuss organ donation and transplants. Before teaching, I worked in an ICU and saw the clear need for organ donation as well as the struggle of family members to to deal with this decision on the worst day of their lives. I have many students who come from gang backgrounds, who have seen useless and random deaths. At the HS level, it gives you a chance to talk about a child who through no fault of their own may be involved in random violence, automobile fatalities, etc., and how it might feel on a parent's worst day to be approached about allowing the harvest of usable organs. Many of my students were surprised that this child needed a child's hands, nor had they considered that a young child with heart failure needs another child's heart, to fit in the body cavity. Most of my students are on the cusp of earning their driver's license, and it gives me an opening to talk about marking on their new license if they would be willing donors, to talk about what is involved to know if a donor meets the criteria and to answer questions about the safeguards to assure that there is brain death before anyone considers transplants. They had a lot of questions, and you might want to bone up on what you know before teaching this lesson. My students were amazed to see what had appeared to be lifeless hands pink up as the blood supply was repaired, and this is a lesson that is taught without bloody surgery, but with insight into the preparation necessary to give the patient the best possible chance at a positive outcome.

I hope that this is something that you can use, and I believe this could work in a health class as well as a driver's education class as well as science.

OK, cooking IS science, and nobody does the science of cooking better than Alton Brown. I can take his Good Eats videos and incorporate them into a science class without difficulty, and then proudly proclaim that he is first a science nerd, such as I am, then a gifted cook, and a wonderful entertainer. Students who had never considered cooking science, or thought about the chemistry of food, or related food to health are entertained as they learn, and that is a magical thing. Don't be afraid to think a little outside of the box to engage students - you will be a better educator for the experience.

Blick's Pick: Earth from lunar orbit

Don't let the title fool you: viewed from the Moon, the Earth does not rise or set, it is always in the same spot in the sky. If you're at the transition between the near and far sides of the Moon, though, the Earth will appear close to the horizon, and therefore look like it is rising or setting. More importantly, this is a beautiful image of Africa and South America from a cool perspective.

Earth is Born Origins Nova Neil DeGrasse Tyson HD 1080p
The tumultuous first billion years of Planet Earth, a time of continuous catastrophe. The traumatic birth of the moon from a titanic collision between Earth and an object believed to have been the size of Mars. Bombarded by meteors and comets, rocked by massive volcanic eruptions, and scoured by hot acid rain, the early Earth seems a highly improbable place for life to have taken root. Despite such violent beginnings, scientists have found new clues that life-giving water and oxygen appeared on our planet much earlier than previously thought.
