Hi Everyone! I am in a teacher prep program. In my Early Literacy class our group is doing a Project about 4 Blocks. If anyone on this site uses this model for literacy I would appreciate some advice. I have been to the websites and I know what each block is but it is hard to dome up with a whole definition, how does this model function in the classroom? Do all the blocks eventually come together or are they always taught separately? I would really appreciate a good functional definition of this model, there is just so much information and it seems confusing. Thank you for any help you can provide me with.

    -Nicole :)

I have attended the workshops about the four blocks last September, and learned a lot. It is a whole language lesson model covers reading, writing, and word studies. If you can have access to the book "The Teacher's Guide to the Four Blocks" by Patricia M. Cunningham, it gives you all the instructions, details, and Q&A about the four blocks. There are a lot of websites about four blocks, but I think it is better to go with the book since that is the "manual" for the four blocks. Good luck!

I am in sixth grade and I use four blocks. There is a great book called Modifying the Four Blocks for Upper Grades by Cheryl Mahaffey Sigmon. Gotta go now, but I will reply more later!

if you still need info., post back and can try to give you an overview.

Thank you sooo much fraggle! I want to review all of my info so I can ask you some substantive questions. I am interested mainly in the lower grades 1st-3rd. I just can't envision what 4 blocks looks like in a classroom, how does it all come together? I am going to review my information again and get back to you. Thank you sooo much for helping me.

No problem! I love this program!!! I've seen it do amazing things for struggling readers, typical learners, gifted students and stressed out teachers. I have a few contacts with principals/teachers that use the program in Philly and the surrounding area (if you want to actually SEE in action). Let me know what you need to know.
