After years of working in the field I went to college for (I'm 40), I decide to go back to what I always wanted to do, Teach. I just finished up my requirements. But now I am really worried that I shouldn't go into teacher because of all the possible changes coming to Florida schools. I am not so worried about the budget changes, I already work for a local govt, so layoffs are always around the corner. I am worried about what the FL legislators are doing in Tallahasse. Would you do it all again knowing what may happen to public education in FL? Eventhough SB6 was vetoed, the state legislators are not going to stop.

Yeah, it's a real transitional time here. Do whatever makes you happy, but don't count on job security. The legislature wants to change the pension plan and many districts are facing layoffs this year. If you really want to teach in FL, keep an open mind about where you're willing to teach. Look around for districts that aren't cutting positions, if any exist.

I have all my requirements to teach in the classroom. All I have to do is apply to the school district.

Just as a side note. I would take a 1/3 paycut plus my healthcare costs would go up. Also, the local govt that I work for is in the same retirement program the Florida Teachers are in. So I would not lose any of my pension time.

If it's something you want to do, you should totally go for it.

Incidentally, what grade level or subject area are you wanting to teach? Depending on what that is, you might be a little 'safer'.

(I'm not really sure what's happening in Florida right now, so take this with a grain of salt.)

I would like to teach 4th to 8th grade. Right now I am certified to teach 5-9, Math, English, Science and Social Studies.

Teaching is something I always wanted to do. I am in a place financially to do it. My daughter is in 2nd grade and I love the energy at the school when I drop her off. Wish I could stay there all day.

It is not that I hate my current job, it just that I want to teach. My job keeps me entertained, so if I decide to stay, I would be ok with it.

Could you add something like TESL? Do you think that might make you more marketable? In my district that's golden.

Times are very difficult in Florida right now. Even though our govenor vetoed senate bill 6, here in Pinellas and many of the other large counties, the cuts are horrible. I heard some staggering numbers about the amount of classroom teachers in Dade and Broward counties being laid off. I think it would be better to look into the smaller counties if possible. They perhaps are fairing better than we are. Our problem is, even though teachers are retiring and positions are opening, they are cutting some of the non-classroom positions and taking those teachers to fill any openings. I think if you are going to make the change, do it now because I am not sure things will improve anytime soon.

I would do it again. This is my 4th year in FL-I came with 28 years experience in 2 other states. If teaching is a calling-it will work. It seems af if things are also difficult in other states. I don't like the politics, but love teaching and the kids!! Good luck with your decision. :) (My daughters are both FL teachers.....)
