I put all of the names in my gradebook the other day, only to have two new students added into my 5th period class today! I am giving my first quiz of the year tomorrow, too!
It's our 4th day. Hopefully, all schedule changes will be taken care of. Either way, once I give a quiz, I need a gradebook.
They did OK. The vast majority got either 9 or 10 out of 10, with a few 8's and 7's and one or two 6's. We're off to a good start!
Luckily my electronic gradebook automatically has the names in it. But my kids all have a couple of grades in there. More stuff I need to grade tonight.
One year I didn't write out the names, I downloaded a list and taped it into my grade book. It took me FOREVER to learn the names, so I haven't done it that way again.
I finished grading my quizzes today, too, and I was pleased with the scores. I actually just finished writing quiz #2, which students are taking on Wednesday!
Math, this year I have 5 geometry classes. So they each got a different version of the quiz-- same concept, different problems. And, yeah, History Teacher, I'm probably going to give another around Wednesday or so. Today I was so caught up in neighborhood stuff that the only schoolwork I did was grading those quizzes. I'll do my planning tomorrow.
Yes, I do. I started teaching Tuesday, so my kids were ready for a quiz by Friday. I try to quiz once or twice a week.
Do you enjoy just having one prep at least just for this year? I know you said you like more or at least I think you did. However, this may give you the opportunity to do even more things with the National Honor Society or try out different things.
I always tell my department chair that I'll happily teach whatever he wants; they can assign everyone else and plug me in last. One prep is less work; several preps are more interesting. So it's win/win regardless of how it turns out.
I give frequent quizzes throughout the school year. Like Alice, I usually give them once or twice a week. They are just quick checks of students' learning of a particular concept, and take no more than 10-15 minutes of a class period.
I have a template saved on word that I print out for my co-teacher and I to record TC data as we start testing students. I just edited it to replace last year's kids with this year's kids. I was about to print it out and then I decided not to. Two kids didn't show up this week. I'm 90% sure they're going to show up Monday because it was a short week and they had horrible attendance last year anyway. Plus, we already got one new additional student this week and who knows what will happen Monday morning. I think I'll wait until Monday night to print it out.
At this point, I've checked 3 homeworks and given one quiz. It's too much to keep track of if the names aren't in my book. If someone withdraws, I'll just cross him or her out.
We haven't done hw or any assessments yet. That will start tomorrow. I made up templates for checking hw, but the TC ones we'll use for the whole year so I'd rather keep the data on scrap paper for now and transfer it onto the template when I'm a little more sure about my class list.
