These were from the beginning of last year, the weekend before the first day of school. My room changed so much since then! I can't find those updated pictures on photobucket though, even though I swear I posted them somewhere on this site! Ah well, here we go.

I'll post my new pictures whenever I can start working in my classroom. As of now all it is is four walls. Hopefully I'll have at least a week before school starts! (week including three days of staff meetings!)

Very well organized! I really like that you have that white/magentic board behind your desk. Was that there already or did you put one up? That is something I could really really use!

I like your big book stand! I have not seen one with the shelves below before--very nice! Where did you get your shelf that holds your construction paper? Was it expensive? I could really really use that. I love all these ideas! My room is a blank slate right now--with everything crammed in the middle and boxes! I moved rooms so I get to start decorating all over! If only I could actually get into the building to get started!

Hmmm I may have to ask my handy uncle to make me a construction paper holder. :)

And the white board was in my room last year when I moved in, so I kept it! When I moved furniture I put my desk in a corner and I put the reading table in front of the white board. We did a lot of word study activities with that. I switched rooms again though, so I left it there. If the teacher doesn't want it then I'll take it. It's so nice!

I don't have a link, but I thought I would share what I think is a great idea in my classroom. for the students writing I hang clipboards and above each clipboard I hang the students pictures. I take my digital camera to school the first couple of days and then I take them to costco and get them developed in an hour. When I hang them up the children love to see their pictures and they immediately feel like they are part of the classroom. Hope this helps.

Are the clipboards for the students work? Just wondering. Sounds like a really cute idea!

    Miss Kirby,

    I loved your classroom!

I read the letter to your students that was on the flip chart and thought it was a great idea...just wondering, is writing to them something you do daily or just for the first day?

I think it would be a great way to incorporate writing into the day...just wondering what ideas you had about the students following up with a message also....

    Thanks
    td

Hi, I'm not Miss Kirby :hijack: but I thought I would comment on your question. That is a morning message and I also incorporate those into my daily routine. There are two ways to write a morning message: before the kids come in and then read it together or write it with the kids like interactive writing. I prefer to write it before the kids come in. There are all kinds of teaching points to make with a morning message: spacing, capitals, punctuation, letters, sentences, sight words...etc! I send my morning message home with the student of the day and they love that. There is a wonderful resource book called "Beyond the Morning Message" that has a lot of spin-off activities and great examples of messages. Here is an example of one of mine:
    September 1, 2007

    Dear Boys and Girls,
    Good morning!
    It is Monday.
We will go to music and P.E.
We will celebrate Keren's birthday today!
    Let's get busy!
    Love,
    Mrs. W

I always begin with "Dear Boys and Girls" and "Good morning" and end with "Let's get busy" and "Love, Mrs. W." They pick up on those sight words really fast and love being able to read at least those parts. Of course, the example above was from when I taught kindergarten and it is a little more simple than what I will do in first. Hope that helps! Sorry so long, I just think morning messages are a wonderful teaching tool that all teachers should use--and the kids love reading them! :)

Thanks so much! I love this idea, and think it would be a great way to have something for the kids to do when they arrive every morning and are waiting for the day to begin! I need to get that book!

Yep, it's my morning message! For about half the year I was really good with this, but it tapered off. :( I'm going to try to be more consistent with it next year.

Thanks, glad you liked it! I can't wait to post them from my new classroom! I go in Monday and I'm EXSTATIC!:woot:

Haha. They are building a new room, and I get to take it over. They said we can now go in, but can't put furniture paces where there are no ceiling tiles. BUT I DON'T HAVE ANY CEILING TILES!!

True, true. New white board. New cabinets (on their way, but I heard may not be done until after school starts). And I have brand new clean carpet, even if it looks like it came out of a Las Vegas casino.

I heard later this year they are going to come back and put two more doors, because of the fire code. I don't understand why they can't do it now. It's silly. We are going to be under construction all year it looks like!!!

Are they going to draw an extra door in the meantime? HaHa!
If it's for the fre code, you'd think there needs to actually be another door in place before the students come!!

    Hey Miss Kirby,
Quick question: What does your "Hung up on a word" poster say? (cant's see the details) I've been looking for something like that!

And good luck with your room!!! We know it'll come together!

They are reading strategies. Honestly I'm not sure what it says exactly. We ended up not really using that poster much, and made our own list with picture clues.

Yes! whatever part of the writing process they are in goes on top that way I can see who needs to still work on revising or editing... I also turn over the students who are not done with that days assignments so that the next day they are first on my list of students that still need my help.
