What will you be reading to your students on the first dy of school? It doesn't matter what grade you teach. Let me know the title and the grade. Let's get a list going! Thanks

I have a few that I'll spread out over the first few days (3rd grade)

First Day Jitters (it actually appears much later in our basal reader, which I don't really understand)

Stripes: students will draw their own stripes afterwords

When the Relatives Came: One of my personal favorites, and it kicks off our Cynthia Rylant author study!

I'll also start doing a chapter book read aloud week 2ish. I'll probably start with Wayside School this year.

4th ~ Me and one my co-workers are both reading Shiloh to our classes at the moment. The kids are really into it, and it gives us something to read during DEAR since we can't get to library yet.

Last year I read "Thank you Mr. Falkner" by Patriccia Polaco (sp?). I liked it because kids can connect with the anxieties the character was going through... sort of a good message for day 1.

I'm looking for other "First Day" themed books ... any ideas?? Or even just Teamwork themes.. working hard themes... basically anything that I can tie into our first week of building a community etc...

I second Recess Queen for building a classroom community.

I also read "Have You Filled a Bucket Today?" This book really build on clasroom communities, bullying, and making someone feel good about themselves. I read it more than once throughout the year if I feel my kids need a refresher course!
We also have little buckets of our own in a pocket chart where students can slip compliments and thank-yous. I really endorse it!:thumb:

My 3rd graders loved the Black Lagoon series. I'd read one a day for the first week or two.

I've also read Mr. Peabody's Apples and done a lesson/project on using kind words.
