I have been a teacher for 6 years. I taught 2 years in 2nd grade and 4 years in Kindergarten. This will be my first year teaching in a special education setting. What type of activities would you suggest for the first day/week of school? I will have 17 kids (1st - 5th grade). At this point I do not know anything about developmental levels. Thanks for any help you can give me.

17 kids??? All day?? That's craziness! I have 13, and it's a handful. The first week of school, I would plan lots of center activities. You need to do assessments in order to find out exactly where the kids are developmentally speaking. Good luck!

17 kids seems like an overload for a life skills class!

What state are you in that allows 17 kids in a life skills class!

It's times like this that I am thankful there are laws that "cap" autism classes at 6 for elementary and 9 for secondary!

    That is nuts!

I am in Texas. I know that is way too many kids. I would not be surprised if thats why the other teacher quit. It is really enough for 2 classes. I will have 3 paras. I am concerned because I have not ever taught life skills before. I don't even know if this will work. It's going to be a scheduling nightmare. And how long is it going to take me to assess all of these kids skills? Does anyone have an beg of year assessment that they could share?
