Ok, here's a dumb question, but it's something I've been thinking about. What kind of things about yourself do you tell your classes on the first day? I remember teacher I had always talking a lot about their families and their teaching experience. I'm single w/o kids, and I don't really want to volunteer the information that I'm fresh meat lol Anyone have a standard introduction that you give every year?
I just talk about where I went to school, what kinds of work I've done before, and what kind of person I am.
I'm single without children also. I use a sharing basket with the kids the first day. The basket includes 5 things that represent me. Last year I included something that was my favorite color (pink) and a souvenir from a trip. You could also share pictures with them. In my room I have a picture of me from second grade, the kids loved it.
I do very little of it that first day. You know that scene in Shrek where they talk about Shrek being like an onion?? That's kind of like me-- they get to know me one thin layer at a time.
I don't really tell the students much about me. They'll learn about me as we go. If I have them do a project to get to know them, I will model it. But I don't always do that. Because we are such a small school, and the kids have grown up together, it isn't necessary.
Yeah, most of my kids are already going to know each other, so I wasn't going to do any kind of big getting to know each other activity. I read somewhere about making a small "about your teacher" bulletin board. I might just collage a poster board or something...
