To all you substitutes, when do your districts start school? How many yrs subbing will this yr be the start of? Have any of you ever subbed on the very 1st day of school? My dist starts Mon., Aug. 9th (but I'm not really avail until the Mon after we rtn from Thanksgiving vacation.) This will be the start of about my 8th yr of subbing & I sure hope this will be the last one...I say it that way because there were a few yrs when I didn't sub much at all & another yr I had a permanent job in btwn. But, subbing's been good to me. It's something I can always do or return back to if I have to! (Technically, I've been a sub since Jan 1999.) I've never in my life subbed on the very first day...maybe during the 1st wk. I've been subbing for so long, I've stopped being nervous. It's just about seeing the kids again. Many times, I worked w/ the same kids in the past, so it's interesting to see how they've grown.

Of the 5 I am signing up for (2 on the list officially, 3 still in progress), 1 starts Aug. 9, 1 starts Aug. 10 (the 2 I am off. signed up for), 1 starts Aug. 11, 2 start Aug. 16. Kids first day is Aug. 18. I've been subbing 9 1/2 years. I know for certain that I've subbed on the first day of school the past 3 years. I don't remember before that.
School starts September 7th. This will be my second year subbing...still holding out hope for a job, but I really think another year subbing will be beneficial. I didn't get any letters of rec last year. This year I hope to do more elbow rubbing.

I'm starting my 9th year :|... one district of mine starts end of August, the other a week or two after that. And I can't ever recall working a first-day--I've worked many last days though!
I'm not a sub. But I HAVE missed the first day --last year, for my thyroid surgery. And a month, starting the second week, the year before for my matectomy. And the second day, in 1999, for an amnio (You don't schedule them; you go when they tell you to go.) And, medical crises aside, I'm very rarely absent. But sometimes things happen that are out of your control.
The first day of school for my school district is August 25. This is my second year subbing. I haven't subbed on the first day of school yet.
School starts on the 18th. This will be my 3rd year subbing. I haven't subbed on the first day of school, but I have subbed during the first week of school. Ms. I: I agree with you about seeing the kids. Even though it's only my 3rd year, I've been subbing pretty regularly for one particular school in the district and I have gotten to know many of the students. It will be great to see most of them as seniors this year. I can't believe I first met some of them when they were about 5 feet tall and now they're approaching 6 feet.

One of the districts starts tomorrow and the second one starts on Tuesday. I am also subbing in preschools as well. How many yrs subbing will this yr be the start of? -This will be my second year of subbing. Have any of you ever subbed on the very 1st day of school? -I have subbed on the very first week of school actually. It was challenging but exciting nevertheless. I was an instructional aide assisting the teacher with one other regular aide.
