So I went to visit my old college roommate, her husband, and their new baby yesterday, and come to find out, his mom is the principal of the middle school in the town where he grew up! Surprise of all surprises. And it's a district I've considered applying before, they've just never had any openings. But he told me he'd talk to his mom about me and ask her to keep her eye out for anything that might open up. Well, I looked online today and there was an English/Language Arts opening at the high school! I immediately emailed my roommate's husband and asked if he wouldn't mind speaking to his mom and seeing if she would mention my name to this principal. I was planning on applying and sending her my cover letter and resume anyway, but it definitely couldn't hurt to have another principal in the district throwing in a good word for me, right?! I heard back from him a few hours later... he'd already talked to his mom, who had emailed the other principal before they even got off the phone! She told my friend to tell me to get in my application ASAP and send the other principal all my info, and while she couldn't guarantee anything, hopefully her contacting this other principal would be just the foot in the door I need to get in for an interview and really shine. So of course, I applied right away, and just sent off my cover letter and resume attached to an email briefly mentioning who I was and throwing in there that I was a friend of the son of the other principal, who had emailed her about me. This is the best connection I've ever had when applying for a position, and while I'm not getting my hopes up, I've definitely got my fingers crossed!!! Just had to share my excitement. P.S. I'm going to start mentioning to anyone and everyone that I'm looking for a teaching job. I never knew this guy's mom was a principal, and I've known him for 4 years!
