A high school English teacher was posted late last week in my district. Usually, this school takes its time about hiring teachers and I was thinking that if they did call me for an interview, it would be a couple of weeks. (This school passed me over twice last year, so I wasn't sure I would even get an interview.) Anyway, today was the first day of school and I got called to sub. The new principal approached me right after I got there and asked me if I was the sub who had an application in for the English position and if I could come back at 4:15 for an interview. Needless to say, I said yes.

I feel pretty good about this interview. I didn't stutter and stammer like last time and I think I answered the questions okay. I do wish I had went more into detail about discipline in the classroom, but I can't change it now. They said I would hear something by Friday.

    Wish me luck!

Just thought I would give an update. I talked to the principal a little while ago and he told me they had hired someone else. Needless to say, I am upset. On the one hand, this would have been a difficult job. There is no permanent classroom for this position and each period, the teacher will have to switch rooms. On the other hand, it would have been a job. I have subbed at this school since October and they keep calling me. Yet, I have now been passed over for 3 different jobs. If I am not good enough to hire, why am I good enough to sub?

On a brighter note, I have also applied for a math job at the middle school and they will probably interview soon. I would actually rather have that one, so maybe me not getting the English job is a blessing in disguise. I'm just afraid of not getting any position this year and being forced to sub.

Sounds like the middle school job is right for you. Go forth and WIN that job! Remember slow down when you are speaking. Make eye contact. Speak clearly and articulate ~ smile! Answer questions thoughtfully and interject humor when possible. Make sure to shake their hands and tell them that you had such a good feeling when you walked into the school. You immediately felt at home and would love to be a part of their team. Make sure that they know you are a team player, flexible, and put the needs of the kids first.
