I am curious what other teachers may do in leiu of a final paper exam. My principle is big on getting away from traditional multiple choice exams and I tend to see his point. What is the purpose in such an assessment at the end of the year if it can no longer inform instruction? For students who do not do well on tests is it a real test of their knowledge or ability to apply what they learned? So, I am only giving an official exam to my Chemistry students, making projects that focus of my Bio, Earth, Life and Physical science classes. I am curious how other teachers feel about having projects versus tests, and if you do them, what are some examples that you feel have been a good showcase of student understanding of a semester’s coursework?
