Feeling Like Starting ALL Over..AN UPDATE! So as some of you already know, I was offered a position. I have all my paperwork, information, attachments, you name it is in to that district....and it has been a month since I was "offered" the position... So I have been waiting and waiting for them to give me my contract, come in and take my picture for my ID, background tested, etc. I have been contacting HR seeing where they are with my information as well as keeping my principal informed. This morning, I decided to call up to HR and ask what is up with my contract and such (I need an offer letter too for a place to live)...I spoke to an HR person which told me "I COULD NOT BE HIRED SINCE I AM NOT A DISPLACED TEACHER" and that "THEY ARE NOT ACCEPTING NEW HIRES." Then I became distraught and upset. I told my principal what happened and she said she would call... So now I am to the point of saying this is pointless and going back to the drawing board and email principals and such almost 3 weeks before school started :/ **Talked to someone at Headquarters (I did not go down there I did not want to look like a fool) and told the person about the situation..
What?? That doesn't sound right. Why couldn't they tell you that beforehand? I am so sorry. Do you have a current job right now? I hope it all works out for you one way or another..I'm always a firm believe of "Everything Happens for a Reason", and maybe this wasn't the right fit for you..something bigger and better will be coming along your way!
I feel as though someone has been pulling my leg left and right...I bought all these supplies and getting stuff ready....for nothing! I have no current job and was about to move...looks like I am going to be a homeless poor person.
Maybe the HR lady is just a crab and not a nice lady and doesnt know what she is talking about? Wait for the principal to talk to them and then wait to see what they say. I dont see why they would offer you the position and get your hopes up and then not contact you to let you know of the situation. hope everything is okay. Let us know.
Well apparently the HR lady is a crab at like any time (my principal even said it during the interview)..and like this is what else makes me mad If this district was only hiring the "non placed" teachers, then why did they let me do the application, submit all documents, get a preliminary interview, go on interviews, and all that jazz just for one person to tell me know... Meanwhile the other HR person I have been talking to says all my paperwork is in order they are just waiting to hear something from their certification department.......
Hang tight and give the principal some time to sort this all out. Call her back in a few hours and ask what else you can do to expedite the process.
Some people should not be in positions where they have to deal with people. That lady sounds horrible. I agree...let your P get everything worked out. Everything will be fine. Hang in there!!! Hugs!!
I just hope no one is pulling my leg..I already met some of the people that work there and some of the kids... I have all these supplies and ideas, and I don't want them to go to waste...and I want to be legit when school starts because I am not going to be teaching for free lol
Sorry to hear this... Like others are saying; the P would have known this rule and I feel like the H/R person that you spoke with is unaware of your situation. You were offered a job and the other H/R person knew that your paperwork was in the loop.
I would give the P an opportunity to clear it up... though sometimes HR does complicate the hiring process, especially in a large county! It also doesn't mean that you can't apply to other jobs. Maybe just continue the application process with other districts... it wouldn't hurt! I don't know where in MD you are, but there are quite a few school systems in NOVA that are hiring still.
I am going to RE-email principals for the 3rd time this year tomorrow.... and I just read the city CAN hire new hires, teach for america, and baltimore teaching residency as long as it falls under a certain certification inwhich it does for me because I am elementary education!
I'm sure there is a miscommunication. Can you show up to the show tomorrow morning and ask what's up?
Don't worry too much because I was on the same boat. I was unofficially hired on April 18, but I did not get paper work until the end of May. The contract wasn't signed till June 4.
But you see, I need to be paid..I have bills and such...I ain't gonna do this out the kindness of my heart..that isn't going to pay my rent or my insurance
Lol..they won't let you teach without being on payroll or filling out all of the necessary paperwork. I feel like this HR woman shouldn't have said anything to you to cause you this undue stress. Have you let anyone know what she told you? That is unprofessional. Sorry that you're going through this..hang tight and keep us updated!!
The principal of the school that "hired" me knows..and I told few friends..and put it on here because I wanted to get other's intake on this situation.... If they couldn't hire then why did I get interviewed? Don't make any sense at all...I have been a wreck all day long ...
You need to relax! I know you say you need to get paid and trust me I respect money but for the sake of your kids I really hope that isn't the first thing on your mind. I read you are a recent grad, most people who graduated three years ago are still looking for a job at this point. Be grateful you have a P on your side. Sorry, but it bothers me to no end for people to say they want to get a job so they could get "paid" I really hope you are going into this for the right reasons.
Just thinking about the money perspective, do you even know when your paychecks start? I don't think our new ones start until September... I'm not sure you are going to get a paycheck right away. Sometimes Ps are told to interview, but then forced to take destaffs first. Once all the destaffs are taken care of, the Ps can then go back to the pool of applicants that they interviewed and hire. I know a few years ago our P was interviewing months before they were allowed to actually hire people outside of the county. I'm sorry this is happening. It's too bad. It is a good thing though that the P is still saying that he/she wants you. I think it will get cleared up in the end. Maybe try calling HR again and say that you read they were hiring (and cite the source)?
and thats fine..and NO it isn't about money...I didn't go to college for 6 years to make $41k a year! If you knew my personal situation then you would understand why I need a paycheck or proof of income coming in... I called another HR person tonight and left a voicemail..
Did they specifically say what was holding up the certification? If you get some specifics on what they are waiting on, maybe you can help get them moving by getting them the info they need! I know that sometimes references don't get back fast enough, or your teaching license might be delayed. It might help to find out what the problem is. I know most HR offices are really slow, which is understandable. It's hard for us to accept because they hold up things in our lives and make things inconvenient for us, but they are dealing with many schools and many applicants. Just keep contacting them (without being too pushy), and calmly explain your dilemma. Explain to them why you need the contract (as proof of employment for your housing situation). Sometimes you can get a letter of intent or something similar for that purpose. I am sure it will work out in the end, however frustrating it is. And if for some crazy reason it falls through, luckily it is still the beginning of August, and the majority of schools in the area don't start for a number of weeks. My first year of teaching I actually got hired in the middle of October!
I think they are just checking to make sure what I say I am certified in, that its true and accurate. I will try and explain to them the situation again of how I need that letter or intent/offer letter to get a place to live...I tried to do that last week, and my emails got pushed aside to it.
I think the concerns are absolutely valid. None of us got a degree to enable us to volunteer in a classroom. TeachingTy is hoping that, as promised, she will be a full time faculty member. Of course it's not "about the money." It's about the job.
I can see why you need that letter of intent. Can't the principal help you with that letter? I can totally feel you about the money thing. I worked all summer paid, as well as getting paid training, but my first check won't come until the end of September. In the meantime I got a credit card with no interest for 6 months.
To get the apt I have, I need salary and the principal does not know what exact salary I will be starting on..she could type me up a letter saying I have a job but it is not valid to the apartment I am getting.
Ask her to write you will be starting on Step 1--the minimum salary you could make. I'm sure that will be good enough to get the apartment.
True, but my principal already told me she could not put any salary in any letter she types as of right now for me
Yep. If this is a public school, starting salary should not be a big mystery. If it is a private school, the principal should have some idea what the minimum salary would be.
I really hope this gets solved for you tomorrow. I know the burden this must be hanging over you! I dont think the P would waste their time and yours if this wasnt legit. And if things did fall through, I feel like they would have told you that when you called today and asked them about it. I know how you feel with the apartment. I just moved here. My boyfriend is a new teacher too in our town and he had to get a letter from the school so we could get this apartment and they wouldnt let us sign the lease until we had the letter and all of that. As for the money, he is a football coach and the basketball coach and has been doing stuff all summer without a pay day since he is new and it wont go in affect until the middle of sept. Its hard to do when you have to move here and work for what seems like "free" for a few months until you get your paycheck. I am in the same boat now too since I just moved last week and quit my job. We are just trying to get by and try to not go out alot or spend money on unnessary things. Its also hard for a new teacher because theres so many cute things you want for your room So I understand your situation. Let us know what happens!!
I will keep everyone updated on anything I find out..until then I guess I will email all the principals in Maryland.........................again.
