My husband and I want to get a dog VERY badly, but have to wait till we have our own home. We already have the breed picked out...a golden retriever. I had one growing up, and know they are a great family dog. So, just wondering what everyone's favorite breed(s) is/are?

My top 3 would be: golden retriever, lab, or Bernese Mountain Dog (a VERY large dog, but oh, so cute!).

Boxers - they are playful, fun, energetic, and are great with kids.

My fav: a dachshund. We got our first one almost a year ago, and we are in love with him.

Others would be: boxers, german shepards, rotts, and mastifs.

We have 2 lab (black) mixes ... I am forever sold on that breed. Shiny black fur, big brown eyes, smart, loving.

I am a fan of big dogs. Dalmatians are a favorite, but I REALLY love Great Danes. However, my tiny house would not work well with one :) And, Dalmatians shed way too much!

I have been thinking about a dog. If I get one, it would likely be a dachshund (smooth coat). I like short haired dogs and do not want to drag a dog to get its hair cut constantly. That or a beagle.

I am anti-yappy dog. Sorry to all those who have one, but after listening to the person in the next apartment's 2 dogs yap for a year and a half, I never want to see one again (or more specifically HEAR one).

Great Dane, Lab, bulldog are my faves. Also like beagles. I always wanted to have a big dog and a little dog, like a great dane and then a bull dog. I just think it would be cute.

We used to have a beagle. We loved her, but she was ornery! That was pre-kids. Now I want a good family dog. I'm leaning towards a lab, but am also considering an Australian shepherd.

Dalmatian... what a wonderful, devoted, intelligent breed.

Doberman Pinchers... love the physique of this animal- not sure about their personality

YELLOW Lab... With their black markings, they are not only gorgeous but intelligent and WONDERFUL companions.

Great thread! I can't believe I didn't start this thread myself. I love unique breeds that you don't see everyday & I like smaller sized breeds. My favorites are:

    Boston Terrier (of course!)

    French Bulldog

    Pug

    Bichon Frise

    Italian Greyhound

    Mini Schnauzer

Go to dog shows in your area & see the breeds up close. Talk to the breeders & handlers. I did all of that as part of my research before I got my dog from my breeder. I also belong to one of the Boston Terrier clubs in my state & I participate in a Boston Terrier discussion board.

It's interesting to know how many people don't know what kind of dog I have when they see him. I hear them say all kinds of breeds that they "think" he is! :)

OUr current dog is a chocolate lab. The one before her was a yellow lab.

I love labs. I love their temperment-- I can't tell you the numbe of times that one of my kids as a toddler crawled all over one of our dogs. I love that we can take food away from our dog and she won't skip a beat.

And I'm also a fan of big dogs.

I think that, regardless of the breed, dogs NEED to be well trained. That's probably the most important part of the equation.

Pug! I am getting one in less than a month. They are small, do not yap, and are very friendly.

My favorite memory of my old pug is with a little 2 year old girl. Her father told me she was terrified of dogs because she had gotten bitten. She saw Lucy in the park and came up to her and pet her. Her dad cried, and Lucy loved the attention:)

I adore most varieties of retrievers as well as border collies. My aunt is a professional breeder of Tibetan Terriers. They are so cute, but when you've spent extended time with a dozen of them yapping at once, their adorability wears a wee bit thin.

I've got a thing for big "mixed up" dogs. Ours are all strays or shelter dogs.

I had a great German Shepherd/Australian Shepherd that I had for 14 years. He looked like a small German Shepherd with no tail.

We just adopted a husky with MIL. She's a husky mixed with "handsome wandering stranger". She wanted a watchdog for her farm, but she wanted us to pick the dog since it's going to be ours eventualy.

We were adopted by a dog that was abandoned by our neighbors. We called him a "redneck special"--pit bull and walker coonhound. Even before his family abandoned him completely, he stayed with us most of the time. He was here for about five years.

This guy was hanging around our house for several weeks. He thinks he's a lap dog, and he sure can eat a lot! I think he'd be a handsome fella with a good bath & brushing.

We have a husky/ heelr mix who is a real lovey boy. I am a shelter dog person now. But we had a pure breed brittany spaniel who was very smart and Norweign Elkhounds (except for their hair)are great too. Every once in awhile you can find them at shelters.

Me too  Our other dog is a Shiba Inu and he is super smart, but the hair is a problem - always shedding and needs regular grooming. He is a great larger dog for aparment/condo dwellers because he is very quiet and very clean.

My family has had Lhasa Apsos for ages - 3 of them over the years and they are great family dogs. We have a two year old Pomeranian that DH was surprised with for Christmas, and she has completely stolen our hearts.

I have a weakness for small cuddly lapdogs that love to play. :)

I have a full blood mutt. =) He's a dalmation/basset hound cross and he's pretty awesome. However, I am a sucker for any dog that's insanely furry and long haired- like American Eskimos and Pomeranians (but a calm not yappy one if they exist.)

I love ours sons American Bulldog. He's only a year old and has a head the size of the moon, with a wrinkle on top. However, he is enormous and powerful when he plays. He has torn up their whole back yard just running. He THINKS he's little yet and tries to get in your lap to cuddle. Very cute dog.
