I also LOVE the Mary Engelbreit book of Nursery Rhymes. I'm not sure the name of it, but her illustrations are so captivating. My 9 month old LOVES it.

    7. The Chronicles of Narnia (The Lion, the Witch, & the Wardrobe)
    8. Bridge to Terabithia

    10. My Side of the Mountain
    11. Hatchet
    12. The Indian in the Cupboard
    13. The BFG, The Witches, Matilda (basically anything by Roald Dahl)
    14. The View from Saturday

    16. Walk Two Moons

Please let me know if you need authors/publishers for any of these titles!

    Some of my favorites are:

    The Report Card (Clements)
    Frindle (Clements)
    Witness (I forget the author)

I had others in mind, but now I am drawing a blank. There are so many excellent books.

When I had the opportunity to do sit in for a fourth grade teacher, I read Animal Farm by George Orwell. The children didn't get the higher themes in the book, but they were certainly horrified at the betrayal of Napoleon and Boxer's death... to make it a bit friendlier, I sort of reworded the meetings with the dogs... just seemed like the right thing to do.

I was hoping to expose the students to the better side of classics so that they wouldn't be so afraid to dive in during high school.

So, even though it could go either way, I have to say Animal Farm.
