I am curious... I am trying to compile a list of all time favorite children's books. Do you mind sharing your favorite? I am making a list of picture books as well as chapter books...

I have not read Stellaluna.... I guess I should.

 

I love "A Chair for My Mother".... and "10 Apples Up On Top"..... "Roxaboxen".... "Pipi Longstocking"... "Stone Soup"... jsut a few of my huge list

 

How strange. I own HUNDREDS of childrens books (perhaps even thousands in storage) and I have never heard of "10 Apples Up On Top"..... "Roxaboxen"....

I am going to have to do some serious reading over the holidays!

Grandpa's Teeth is another favorite. I can't remember the author and the book is at school, but the kids always love it!

Stephanie's Ponytail, Thomas' Snowsuit, and Pigs by Robert Munsch are good also.

Matilda & The Witches!

 

I recently read My Father's Dragon to my second graders. They absolutely loved it. I had never read it growing up, but found it this summer. It is a Newberry honor and such a great book.

Also...The Birchbark House is a great culturally sensitive alternative to Little House on the Priarie books.

 

ALL of L.M. Montgomery's books! (Anne is only one of many heroines; Emily is actually my favorite, closely followed by Jane.)

Everything by Madeline L'Engle (I love the way her characters interact and overlap, from book to book)

Rowling, it goes without saying, so I just said it. Marvelous and enriching, every. single. word.

Lenora Mattingly Weber. Old, older than I am, even. Back in style. Family values, WW2 basic living, etc. Fabulous.

Elizabeth Enright. Oh, how I loved her when I was in lower elementary and I still love her. Her series about the Melendys, and the Gone-Away Lake books. . . . "The Sea Around Us", etc.

Judy Bolton mysteries. Far classier and better than that insipid Nancy Drew.

I bet your students are reading the Charlie Bone books; if not, please introduce them.

I must stop now, lest I drone on forever and totally hijack this thread. (YA books are my thang, in case you couldn't tell.)

Max Lucado The Crippled Lamb is one of my favorite Christmas stories!

 

My favorite's were: "Charlotte's Web" and "Sylvester and the Magic Pebble".

I remember the day in 3rd grade that the librarian introduced me to The Secret Garden. It made me a reader for life. Later on, I loved all the books by Madeline L'Engle - A Wrinkle in Time, A Wind at the Door, The Arm of the Starfish, A Sharply Tilting Planet. I also poured for hours over my copy of A Child's Garden of Verses, memorizing some of my favorite poems.

 

I love the Max Lucado Children's Books. The Crippled Lamb, You are Special, The Children of the King, The Song of the King.

I am not a fan of American Girl books because of their marketing strategies. Successful, of course, but annoying.

Oh, Upsadaisy, I soooo agree with you about "The Secret Garden", and all Burnett's other beautiful books. I named my daughter after Sara Crewe from "A Little Princess." L'Engle's dozens of fantastic books (It's A SWIFTLY Tilting Planet, by the way. . . sorry) that all interact with each other so that if you read them all you get so much more out of each one. . . She's not afraid to tackle sensitive and disturbing issues, either, which makes her books even more fantastic. . . the older her characters get, the 'older' her style gets. .. .

She also writes for adults and those are just as great!

Of course, any really good YA or Children's book will also appeal to adults. If it doesn't, it wasn't really very good writing.

I wish some movie-maker would do a GOOD version of Secret Garden and Little Princess, without all the stupid Hollywood changes. I can't watch the film versions without going into convulsions of frustration and disgust. (Wonderworks did do a great Little Princess, but it was for TV. I highly recommend it; it's almost word-for-word from the novel.) (Everything Wonderworks does is quality.)

Mamacita, thank you. I don't know why I typed sharply when I, of course, know it is Swiftly Tilting Planet. Yes, her books do advance in maturity levels. She has a gift. She expanded my universe.

Oh, and Barbara Cooney is my favorite illustrator, I think.

How about The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle or Beezus and Ramona? Those were my absolute favorite chapter books growing up. Now I love the Harry Potter series and the Eragon series.
