    Hi All,

I've been reading all of your posts and the info here is fantastic. Just last week, I had my first assignments: for 1st grade and K-am. The 1st graders gave me a run for my money. Luckily, my daughter is in the 1st grade at this school so I know how things run. My class was trying to pull a lot of "fast ones" on me- "Mrs. F., the art room is upstairs"... when I know it's in the basement. "We always get 2 recesses, etc." My K-am class was a joy. I would happily go there again. The 1st grade class? Not so much, it just really wasn't worth the 49.00/day (what pay is after taxes.)

What's your favorite grade to teach? BTW, Is high school really that bad? The town I sub is an quiet suburban town in CT. I know districts/schools make a difference but I'd love to hear any stories from the trenches. Thanks for sharing.

    Betty

I like 1st, 5th, 2nd, and one particular kinder class. It really depends on the class. Our second grade group is quite the clan this year. I was in one 2nd grade room a couple days last week and they just weren't the most lovable group.

I find that if they are the same grade as my kids I get less respect. Also, I don't like to sub in the same classroom my kids are in unless it is a Specials class.

I love subbing for 4th, 5th, and 8th grade. I haven't tried HS yet just because they're all taller than me! I think the location/district for HS would have a lot to do with whether or not the school would be doable.

Good luck! I taught kinder and 2nd, and know that I am cut out for the older grades.

I have been subbing for preschool, 7th and 8th graders. The jr high kids are great, but I am going for my certification in early childhood. I am amazed at how respectful my jr high kids are- they are great kids I have actually had no problems with any of them. Its great to experience all different age groups and see the differences it sure is an eye opening experience.

My favorite grades to sub for are 4th and 5th grades. I won't sub at the high school, and I haven't talked myself back in to subbing at the middle school again. The one grade I really dislike subbing for is Kindergarten. Waaaay to young for me! :)

Favorites are 7, 10, 11. For 8 or 9 I feel like I've done a good job if both the students and I survive - I haven't quit and they aren't in ISS or detention. 12th grade early in the year is OK, after second semester mid-terms many of them need to stay home.

I have subbed for almost every grade and it is hard to pick a favorite. For me, most of the time it is dependent on the class and the regular teacher, not the grade. I know people who won't teach high school or middle school at all, some will teach high school but not middle school etc. I am not a big fan of teaching high school but I do it if I need to work. The 8th graders this year seem to be really bad so I'm not liking working with them but will if a Principal asks me to. I like to do resource/intervention classes with 6th grade.
Also, what I have found is that the grades that are close to moving on are harder. They are the big fish and they get a little cocky. I cry about how hard it is sometimes for $120/day, I don't know how you do it for less......

    I LOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE 2nd Grade

Overall I would have to say that 2nd grade is my favorite grade to sub for. Having said that, I also believe that it depends on the school and class. There is one school that I will go to for any grade or specialist because the staff and kids are so totally awesome. There are some schools I will only go to for certain grades or teachers.

Last year we actually had trouble getting subs to come to our elementary. They all wanted middle or high school. It wasn't that the kids were bad or anything but that it was exhausting to be on the go all day. Some said little ones wore them out.

I only sub for k-5th and special needs. I have classes that make me "earn my money" but none that I can't go back and do. If working in the school system and kids is really for you then you can handle it. Thats just my opinion.

$120 a day?!? Where do you sub? I work in Wisconsin and the highest I get is $85 (it jumps to $164 for long terms). Even when I worked in St. Louis, Missouri I only made $92 a day. :2up:

As for favorite grade, I've done everything from 4K to 8th grade and once a high school ag. class. I don't really like kinders...too young for me, but will do it (I have certain teachers who always ask for me, even knowing it's not my fav). I am also not a huge fan of middle school, but again, at the middle school I go to I'm their best sub, so I end up there a lot. I find that 2nd-4th are my favorite. I start seeing a lot of attitude by 5th, and don't like the neediness of the younger ones. But I agree that it depends on the class...some of my least favorite classes have been in the 2nd-4th range.
