What are some of your favorite big books that you use at the beginning of the year to teach basic concepts.

Retelling, title, fiction, non fiction, predictions, characters, setting?

Also if you have any seat work activities to go with the books that would be great.

In the beginning I tend to focus on concepts of print like 1-1 matching, directionality and spaces between words... and also try to link it to my word study. Now that I've launched Reading Workshop and am moving on to the next unit, I will also link it to reading workshop.
Mrs. Wishy Washy is great for visualizing...

I know you didn't ask, but later in the year I use Captain Quake and Boss Bird for characters. I also like Lazy Duck for character.
