Extra Time in Guided Reading..What to Do?

    I teach 2nd grade. If there is extra time I do the the following: have them write about the book, work on the strategy of the week, or a sight word/vowel pattern game. What are some things you do? I am looking to add some more ideas!

    I have them practice asking and answering questions about book with a partner. Also story map...

    Yes I use story maps too! One of the best things I ever did was laminate a whole bunch of story maps. Students fill it out with white board marker (crazy how excited 2nd graders get to fill out graphic organizer with a colored dry erase marker). Then they can also be reused.

    I like the idea of laminating story maps! I'm going to have to try that.

    You could do a writing assignment where they try to write like the author. For example, they could imitate how the author uses quotation marks, creates humor or constructs sentences.

    Oh, yes! Love the idea to laminate them...second graders DO love using white board markers!
