I am really excited about Andrew Clements' new book, Extra Credit. It is about a girl in America who writes to a boy in Afghanistan. She has to write to someone with a culture that clashes with her own as an extra credit project to pass the sixth grade; she has been a lackadaisical student for many years, and though she is brilliant, she is failing school. She learns a great lesson from this project. This book is fascinating.

I read the reviews, but I haven't yet read the book. I'm glad to read a "real" review. Do you think it would be a good read aloud to start the year with?

I think it's a little too deep for the beginning, but I definitely recommend it during the year. I know I'll definitely be reading it to my class at some point and time this year. The other day, I read it cover-to-cover. :)
