I know most of you are at work now, but 2 explosions occurred at the marathon's finish line! Does anyone know anyone who ran in it? How about work or live near the area? I wonder what evil people were up to this?

Oh no! I'm so sorry to hear that! Were many people hurt?

My stepfather ran in the Boston Marathon four years ago.

Our local reports currently are 2 dead, 23 hurt, at least 6 critically injured. The reports state that 2 bombs exploded, two more were found.

I know two people who were running today. I know that both of them had families in the spectator stands, but I don't know if they were in the stands at the finish line or elsewhere along the course. I realize that updating fb or twitter isn't a priority right now, but I will be on edge until I hear that both women and their families are safe.

I hope they're all okay mmswm. This stuff is so scary.

I hate so much when peaceful, athletic events have horrific endings.

The police commissioner just said there was a third explosion at the JFK Library within the last hour. The injury report has been changed to 'dozens'. The next briefing will be at 7.

Some of the train lines have been closed and other sporting events postponed. Cell phone service in the area has been shut off in case of remote detonators. Scary stuff.

I get text messages from my local news station when things like this happen (along with weather and normal stuff, like traffic problems). I turned my phone on after school and it just erupted with text updates about this. How horrific. I literally feel sick to my stomach over it. I watche one update on CNN, but couldn't watch any more. How horrible.

I looked through a few pictures on Huffington post and there are some pictures of people being taken away in wheelchairs, without legs. I had to stop looking.

    This is just awful.

CBS is reporting that the devices were inside garbage cans. They have recovered some surveillance video showing a person of interest near one of those garbage cans moments before the explosion.

Heard from one friend. She crossed the finish line less than a minute before the explosion. Her family had been at the halfway point, so they're all safe. I haven't heard from my other friend.

I'm thinking right now of those responsible. Where are they at this very moment and what are they saying, thinking, feeling? Do they have smiles on their faces? Are they scared? Do they realize they'll surely be caught? Some would say to not waste energy thinking of these people, but I'm truly curious. Such twisted souls...

One of our teachers was running. Thankfully she had completed it and was back at her hotel before the explosion.

One of her concerns were all of the children there today. It is really just sickening.

Just heard an 8 year old is among the dead. Heartbreaking. CNN says two more bombs located one at a hotel one at unknown location
    Both of those not detonated.

I have heard news about my other friend (through a mutual friend). She is fine but her parents were close enough to sustain minor "stampede" type injuries: some bruises and minor lacerations. They are physically fine but very shaken up.

I am heartsick about all those who were not so lucky.

    I just saw that ...
and a third person has died
This is just evil ... Not biblical evil but evil beyond human comprehension how can anyone much less a group be this evil?

It seems every president gets their horror while "on watch"
Carter Had the Iran hostage crisis
    Reagan had the Libya bombing
Bush Sr had the First Gulf War
Clinton had the Battle of Mogadishu and The Waco siege
    Bush Jr Had 9/11
Now Obama will have The Boston marathon bombing
It is a sad commentary that these incidents have and will define our political leaders

I got a text from the local news channel while I was getting my allergy tests done at the doctor's office today.

Living through the Oklahoma City bombing, I hurt for those families. The nightmares came back last night. I was in class when the Murrell building was hit. I felt the blast. I remember the hours after while staring at the television watching for family and friends in the background because of no or little phone contact. I remember the horrors of seeing small bodies being carried away from the daycare. Last night I wanted to just wrap my arms around those that were there yesterday. My prayers are with the city and with those from my state that traveled to run the marathon. Several are survivors from the Oklahoma City bombing. How awful for them to relive that experience.

It is disgusting how any human being can do this. I cannot help but think about people living i Baghdad who hear bombs going off in public places often. But I think what bothers me most is hearing about bombs or suicide bombers going to funerals to kill people. I boggles my mind.

I had one friend running and another volunteering. A family member works a block away. Everyone is fine.

I just don't understand senseless killings. I know that they happen every day, all over the world, but... I just can't get my head around it.

I believe the Pakistani Taliban even went as far as to deny any involvement in this.

Combined with the ricin detected at the Capitol Building's mail office, seems like a domestic terrorist.

Hope they get caught soon. Rather than the individual becoming another Unabomber.

It's interesting to note how foreign people are labeled "terrorists" while domestic ones are simply "wackos".

(Note this isn't directly in response to Dave, but rather to the media as a whole. :thumb:)

Not sure what point your trying to make, but even the White House, Fox News, CNN, MSNBC, ect are calling this terrorism.

I guess I think any "American" who would want to bomb other Americans is a "wacko American" terrorist
wacko is describing what kind of terrorist they are.

I have heard news commentators use the term wacko.....
One thing I have noticed is the home grown terrorist are loners or have a very small group where foreign terrorists tend to have larger group behind them.

Terrorism does actually have a definition: specifically, it's engagement in low-intensity warfare against soft targets to effect a political goal. Wackos such as Virginia Tech/Newtown/that movie theater were not trying to reach a political goal. People like bin Laden are (presumably) trying to reach a political goal.

Mike's right the terms do get bandied about in a way that sometimes seems calculated to manipulate (or worse, cause) prejudices. It's unfortunate and sad. However, I don't think *quite* as sad as 8-year olds being bombed (and incidentally, his younger sister lost her leg...)
