Another thread got me thinking about my daycare days, and my junior practicum. I've had a ton of experience with the under 5 set. TBH, they have a tendcy to call you mom/mommy on occanison. Have you ever been called mom by a student? Also, how old where they?

On almost a daily basis! I've also been called dad, grandma, etc. My students are 11-12 years old.

 Dad and grandma are interesting choices. If that's you in the picture, you don't look like a granny to me.

    :D That's cute.

All this talk of being called dad, grandma, ect., reminds me of a guy who used to work at my former church's sunday school. All the kids used to call him daddy Paul.

Proud I had that too! I felt so bad because he was serious -- I am WAY to young to have a sixth grader

I've been called mom, dad, grandma, grandpa etc. It always cracks me up! I usually make a joke out of it and say something silly like "Oh, you are my darling daughter. Look how wonderful you are!"

My own two children call me "mama" a lot......and I'm the "papa". :)

I teach 7th graders, and I tend to get called by the name of other teachers on the team multiple times per day. Sometimes I get Mom, and once last year I got "Mamaw".

Of course, today my DH called me by the dog's name.

 This is funny. I think sometimes children have a hard time remembering gender. I often heard my prekers says "Mrs. X did this... He is my favorite teacher". Even in third grade, I sometimes see them accidently mix up he/she.

 This thread is making me cry from laughing. At least you got called a name. In my family, it's common to say "You there" or "Kid" or even "Whatever your name is, come here...". My younger cousins got the worst of it, though. 3 of them are similar ages and all have names that begin with B. On the issue of dogs, my dogs look offended when I mix up their names.

I've always taken that as a compliment. The kids are obviously feeling comfortable in the classroom if they call you the name they call someone they love. I didn't relish being called grandma when I was 21, but the kid who did lived with grandma full time so it was understandable.

I teach high school. When it occasionally happens, it brings an instant chuckle to the whole class.

But I agree- I most definitely take it as a compliment.

Just this past week I was called, "Mo...I mean MrsC." by a very red-faced grade 8 boy. We all get a laugh out of it.

I also get told that I sound just like their mom, but that's a whole different story.

I get called mom on a daily basis by 5/6 year olds. In fact, I get called mom more often now than in the first semester, so it must be a comfort thing (which means I am doing my job ;)).

I have always taken it as the highest compliment a kid can give me! When a child feels that comfortable to call me "mom, dad, grandma, auntie, whatever!" I feel like I have been successful!
My 5th graders call me their school mom. They are very protective of me. Once a sub mispronounced my last name, and the kids were highly upset. I had to talk to them about "everyone makes mistakes, etc" when I returned-I felt so bad for my sub!

I get called mom pretty frequently by my high schoolers. They're always so embarrassed when they realize what they said, but it makes me smile.

I also get called a variety of other teachers' names, mostly the teachers who look like me but every now and then one who reeeeeally doesn't.

I teach 4-year-olds and get called "Mom" on a daily basis. I LOVE when they do that, it's so sweet and reminds me of how closely bonded we are. If they fix it I just smile and answer the question; if they don't notice that they made a mistake I relish the moment. I don't have kids of my own, so I feel like in a big way I am their mom! I also refer to them as "my kids" all the time- much more often that I say "my students." And when we have class discussions about important topics I always tell them that we are having a "Family Meeting."

My kids also get me mixed up with my assistant aaaaall day every day, to the point where we just ignore it. I know they mean me!

I've been called mom, grandma and aunt. This is from kids ranging from 3 in a developmental preschool to 11 years and at the end of fifth grade. I remember that some of my classmates in middle and highschool would even call the teachers by a family relation name too.

I've been called mom, grandma, auntie, etc. I teach 12-14 year olds. This year as a 7th grader was leaving, I called out good-bye and he answered casually "love you." He was mortified. I promised to not tell anyone at school about his slip-up.
