I teach fourth graders who are struggling with math. Estimation with money is our next topic to tame. Any suggestions? (I so think that dealing in REAL numbers makes sense when they are still having simple computation issues!!).

    TIA

    Lisa;)

Estimation and rounding can be troublesome concepts. In 2nd grade I teach 5 as the "magic middle," at which point you round up, allowing students to pop UP out of their seats when we practice with numbers to round up to the next ten.

Could you use the grocery inserts from newspapers, menus, or school supply catalogs, and have them pick 2-5 things to buy, estimating the total cost?

Thanks! I love the "pop-up" idea. Most of my fourth graders are LOW in math. I use many 2nd grade resources...though I have to test them on grade-level. Poor dears.
