I have tons of the small dry erase boards ... enough for each student. I have been using tissues for erasers ... but then we throw them away. Is there anything else you suggest for erasers that might not be as wasteful?
i had kids bring socks, but only like 5 did. so i remembered i had a ton of felt squares in my closet. so i cut them into 4 pieces and they use those. originally i had personal erasers, but the kids screwed them up over the years. oh well...this workds just as good.
I have a bag full of socks I wish I could give you! We never throw them out at my house. If they are wearing thin, I take them to school. I keep a dry erase marker in a sock and then toss the socks in a basket. Then when it's time to pass them out I just toss each student a sock. They put the socks on their hands to use as an eraser. They try to remember which sock had which color marker inside. They LOVE this! They like looking at all the discarded socks and try to find matches. They also try to guess who the sock use to belong to, me or my husband! Clean up is a cinch! They just put their marker back in a toss in the basket. Socks hold up so well I'm thinking about giving each student one to store their crayons in! Ziplocs last no time at all! I have chair pockets but they need to be able to pull their crayons out quickly! Eventually you can use them for puppets too after you wash them of course!
I used the inside foam from old napmats... those red and blue plastic covered one. I cut them into squares about 3x3 in.
I have a bunch of baby socks. They fit right on their fingers, and they don't get all grossed out because they are baby socks instead of big people socks.
I buy a set of garage towels from the auto department @ Wal-mart every year and cut them up into squares for the kids to use. They look pretty yucky by the end of the year, but they are fairly cheap and last through at school year.
I guess older kids might be "grossed out"! My kinders don't think socks are gross! They are very naive about so many things!
I also use baby socks...I just go buy a 12 pack at the beginning of the year at Walmart of the cheapest brand, then I have 24 socks. I just toss them in the washer about once a month, my kids put the sock on their left hand and hold their marker in their right (or vise-versa...)
Felt squares are crazy cheap, and you only need to buy about 3 of them to make a class set of erasers. I have had mine for 2 years now.
