I think I am going to purchase some canvas bags from Oriental Trading for my students to decorate on one of the last days of school. I would like to use the bags for summer learning materials. I plan on sending home the following:

-A letter with summer learning ideas (many of which are websites that are linked on my classroom website)
-A leveled summer reading book list
-A summer bridge learning packet from TPT
    -A mechanical pencil

Any other ideas for small, inexpensive items I can place inside the bags?

Dice with several game instructions (I've bought 12 packs for $1at dollar tree).

Maybe you could have them make flash cards for themselves. Addition, multiplication, science vocabulary, anything you want. It could be morefun if they make a set and then exchange them so they have cards from different classmates.

That is so thoughtful of you! If I was a parent, I would be so appreciative.

I can't think of anything else to add, but I may steal this idea as well. ;) I think it's a very sweet gesture.

This year I'm going to give a list of free ipad apps that are good for students to practice with over the summer. A lot of my students don't have computers but they do have ipads. They might as well do something useful on them over the summer!

I made a binder similar to this idea. Inside it was a table of contents, portfolio of their work showing stuff from beginning to end comparisons (drawings, writing, etc.), some stuff you mentioned, an individual letter to each student that I felt they could probably read themselves, and a CD of pictures from the year.

Thanks for the ideas so far, everyone!

I went with this summer learning packet:

And these items from Oriental Trading:

It was a little more than I wanted to spend, but I can use the fabric markers for other projects, and there are enough bags to last me 2 years. I'm hoping that, by decorating the bags, the kids will be more motivated to do the work inside. :)

Wow, I am loving these ideas! Totally borrowing! I highly doubt most of my kids will even look at any of the things over the summer, but I think the parents will appreciate the thought, and as I get a lot of repeat students it's good to keep up that relationship!

Awesome idea! I tend to share apps I've found with my fifth graders throughout the year.

Also about a week ago, I went to Walgreen and by chance found moshi monster erasers that come in their own plastic case, 6-pack for .49cents! I also found some type of spinner disks that evidently kids collect for .29 & .49 cents, package brings either two or four of them. I bought a bunch of them to give to my students.
