It gives me great pleasure to announce that elmer369 has given permission to post her study guide files here on A to Z.

First, CSET_Notes.pdf, a file of overall strategies with some terminology.

Then two files relevant to Subtests I and III: English Grammar Notes.pdf and Glossary of Literary Terms.pdf.

Now a file for Subtest II, Language_Acquisition.pdf, and one for Subtest IV, Glossary_of_Drama_Terms.pdf.

There's an Excel file of linguistic terms, but apparently A to Z doesn't like Excel files. Let me see what I can do with that.

Please remember to thank elmer, all.

And one more goodie from elmer: it's a list of literary and linguistic terms.

Thanks so much for posting these links, Elmer!
They are extremely detailed and precise, and are certain to help me with my upcoming FTCE SAE 6-12! :)
I really enjoy having the literary terms in an easily accessible location, and the grammar forms are very thoroughly put together.
    Thanks again!:)

Thank you!!!!! My BA is in Drama and I'm hoping to teach in that subject area. I dread having to take an English exam of any kind and this one sounds horrible! These documents have given me some hope and I am very grateful!

Aw, BashBear: if you do drama, you have better tools for Subtests I and III than you think you do, I bet. Look for connections and similarities to things you know rather than focusing on the differences.

("BashBear"? I can't decide whether that means you're a partier who went to Cal or someone who went to USC.)

    practice questions

Hi! i'm new here..you guys are great, i can't believe how much info is on here! any suggestions for books with some practice questions? i'm taking subtest 2 and 3 in march, 2 is the one i'm worried about. the cset website only gives 15 practice questions, i need more! also, has anybody bought the test guides from orange county? are they worth it? anyone interested in selling their copy?

also, here are some books recommended to me for subtests 2 and 3 from a professor at san jose state.

    teach yourself linguistics, jean aitchison
101 key ideas: linguistics, richard horsey
perrine's sound and sense: and intro to poetry
good reasons with contemporary arguments: reading, designing, and writing effective arguments

    Hey TeacherGroupie, Elmer, etc.:

I'm getting ready to retake CSET English Subtest 3 next week. I took all 4 subtests in May, and passed 1, 2, and 4, but ran out of time on the essay subtest (test 3) due to poor time mgmt.

So, my question is... among the excellent resources linked to this thread, which ones pertain to Subtest 3? I pulled up the Subject Matter Requirements from the CSET Test Bulletin. Is "Domain 3" the subject matter for Subtest 3, or are the divisions not alligned that way?

Thanks for any help you can provide.

    Diane

Since you're looking at just the one subtest, try going back to the CSET Web site and pulling up the Subtest Description for Subtest III, which should focus in on the issues that are peculiar to that subtest.

Oh, and keep asking questions in these parts.

Wow, thanks a ton. I have just decided to take the FTCE and teach drama (what I have my BFA in) however there are no study guides on this subject (except Teaching Solutions but everything I've read has been very negative). Your notes at least give me a place to start. I graduated from college 12 years ago! Thanks again!

Welcome to A to Z, NYUsister. (My goddaughter's an NYU alum...)

If you did't keep your textbooks from college, and even if you did, your local big bookstore could be helpful - the last Barnes & Noble I visited turned out to have quite a robust section on theatre arts. You might also try searching the Web for drama teachers' professional associations - there's likely to be helpful material on the Web sites. And most states' departments of education have content standards online - you could check New York's, of course, but other states might have useful sets as well.

Thanks. I actually JUST donated all my college texts to the LA library before I moved back to Florida. I just recently decided that teaching drama was the next course my life would take but the library is a great resource.

I am actually in Florida at this stage (but I'd like to eventually go back to NY to teach).

For very fast help, you may find these links from Answers.com helpful - be sure to look at the subsidiary links:

    http://www.answers.com/topic/linguistics?cat=technology
    http://www.answers.com/topic/language?cat=health

A better option if you have time would be a good short accessible introduction to language or introduction to linguistics. Aitchison's Teach Yourself Linguistics, or Ronald Macaulay's The Social Art: Language and Its Uses, which has just been reissued in a second edition, are good choices.

The Elmer's Information is really helpful. Study literary/figurative language. Write very structured essays (go back to the old five paragraph essay).Make sure you are manipulating proper punctuation and spelling. It took me three tries but after studying this last time I passed III and IV finally. Good luck.
