Tell me what you are doing with ecosystems this year.

I teach younger children, but we always go with different biomes. Last year we studied the desert and looked at the animals and plants that live there....we've done the rainforest and studied the water cycles with the animals and plants, and we've done mountains and studied runoff, etc.

    Bottle Biology

I am new to fifth grade, and to this forum. I have been doing some research on ecosystems to try and design some engaging lessons.

I want to work on some of the ideas from "Bottle Biology". I have found a lot of information on the web about this!

I also searched Teacher Tube and found a couple of clips on ecosystems.

I found a great webquest, and some pretty good research sites.

Let me know if you want some links.

We do ecosystems in 4th and I like to break my kids up into different groups to do research on them. They make food webs w/ pics from our conservation magazines for their ecosystem. They attach the plants/animals w/ yarn and put them on large butcher paper to display. Fun and engaging for them. Good group work. We do a lot of "what if's" w/ the projects. "What if a fire destroyed the forest what may happen?" kinda things.

I will be teaching 5th and 6th for the first time this year. I would love it if you could share what you've found so far on ecosystems. I think it might be one of the first things I do for science this year.

    Teacher Tube Videos

I am hoping to use some of these videos to engage my students while teaching ecosystems...a note...these are on TEACHER tube, not YOUTUBE :)

I'm not sure that these links will work, but if they don't search for...
    Biomes Rock
    Challenges of Our Changing World
    Exploring the Food Change
    Human Effects of Environmental Quality
    The Interactions within a Community
    Biomes
    The Circle of Life

BTW, I have a Smart Board, so I show these videos on that. Last year, our favorite was Mrs. Burke's Area and Perimeter Rap, and our scores on Area and Perimeter *due to this and other strategies* were awesome!!!

I teach the 4th grade, but we have a STC hands-on science kit on ecosystems. We connect soda bottles to create a terrarium and aquarium that rely on each other. We put guppies and some plants as a food source in the aquarium, and we plant different seeds in the terrarium to create an environment for our pillbugs and crickets. It is lots of fun!
