I was wondering what kinds of extra duties teachers do in other states and districts? In my school we have morning duty, bus duty and recess duty. We only get a 30 minute duty free lunch break. Am I just whining or are other people having trouble with little time to even use the restroom?:|

We have morning and afternoon duty. Each teacher takes his or her own class to recess. We have a 30 min duty free lunch and 35 min planning while the kids are at special area. Its really something I have just gotten used to. Also, think of it as a way to get to know other students and make sure everyone is safe.

We have a 50 minute duty free lunch. Each teacher takes a turn having a.m. and pm bus duty-only about 20 min in the a.m. and 10 min after school--the rotation is once every 7 weeks. We also have a 50-65 min. plan time each day.

Grade level teachers do not have bus duty...the principal wants us in our classrooms ready to greet the students. We get a 30-minute duty-free lunch and a 45 minute planning period daily. We are in charge of our class during recess.

Our Morning duty is from 6:45 am until 7:35 am. Our afternoon duty is from 2:30 pm until 3:00 pm.
Recess duty is left to the individual grade levels.
We have to eat lunch with our children. No break there.
We have a 50 minute planning time each day.

We have 15 minutes morning duty twice a week. Each teacher waits with her own class for 15 minutes at dismissal.

Lunch varies but most have one or two lunch duties per week and the rest free. We also get 1 to 2 free periods every day while kids are at specials.

Morning duty rotates (twice a year for one week each time). All teachers have some type of after school duty (about 30 minutes) and recess duty (20-30 minutes). We do have a 25 minute lunch break and a one hour planning period while students are in PE and specials classes.

After 2 years of eating at a table with my 7th graders, I have sworn that I will never work at a school that does not give me some sort of duty free lunch. I wouldn't mind having lunch duty, if they could find some way to allow teachers 20-30 minutes to eat in peace. It was especially awful when I was pregnant, because I would spend so much time dealing with issues (our students were expected to be extremely quiet) that I had maybe 5 minutes to eat (and no time to use the restroom). If I ate too much too fast, I would be sick for the rest of the day. If I didn't eat enough, I would be sick for the rest of the day. My doctor ended up writing a note to my principal requesting that I be allowed to eat in my classroom during the day as needed, or at least have some time to eat a healthy meal and use the restroom during our lunch period. Thankfully, she complied and eased up on her expectations for all of the teachers during lunch. We were allowed to sit at a table away from our students, and as long as the students weren't screaming, they were allowed to talk and socialize (DUH...that is what every middle schooler looks forward to).

We have 60 minutes/week of supervision (could be before school, bus duty, at recess, supervising lunch, etc--we can request up to a point). We are guaranteed 40 minutes uninterrupted lunch (in our contract). We get 190 minutes/week planning time.

We don't have duties in our district, which is so nice! Although we do need to make sure our kids get to where they need to be after school. And if classes don't get subs, we have to "emergency sub" which means we spend our prep in those classes.

We have ONE 20-minute duty (for a whole week) every other week.

We have 40 minutes duty free for lunch and MIGHT have before school, recess, or after school depending on the schedule. But, again, it's only every-other week.

We also get 90 minutes (2 45-minute blocks) of prep each week.

    Chele :)

This year we'll have 4 weeks of hall duty in the a.m. watching the kids sitting in the hall before the bell rings. (LONG story) We have to eat lunch with our kids. We get 50 min planning. In the p.m. all we have to do is put our kids on the bus. Assistants and faculty without classes have morning and afternoon duty--related to breakfast and car-riders.

We have duty free lunch for 30 mins, supervise our class at recess, and do either AM or PM bus duty about 6 times a year for a week at a time. We usually get a 45-50 planning period once a day.

I'm moving to whatever school Mrs. Patten teaches! I hate morning bus duty. I'm not awake yet, and I prefer eating a quiet friendly breakfast with my co-workers in one of their rooms. I used to pay another teacher to take them before I racked up so much credit card debt and can't afford it.
We're supposed to have 30 minute duty free lunch (state law), but they ask us to sit with our class for the first week and every time the monitor is called away or absent, which is often. Oh well, at least I'm awake by then.

Wow, I feel spoiled reading some of these! The students have a half an hour recess in the afternoon and a 45 minute recess for lunch every day. I have to do 2 15 minute afternoon recess duties and one 23 minute lunch recess duty per week. I also have 2 hours of planning time and a one hour planning meeting time with the other prep (kindergarten) teachers.

Teachers have to be in their rooms ready for students at 7:35. We eat lunch with our students, go out to recess with them(if we do recess at all). We have afternoon duty every day. We do get 35 minutes planning time daily while they are at specials. Need to use the restroom? Most classrooms are near enough to another one to ask that teacher to cover for a few minutes.

We have a 25 minute duty free lunch (but that never happens with Kinders) and a 50 minute planning prep during the day. We also are in the hallways by 8am with the bell ringing at 8:25 and bring our kids out to the busses at the end of the day. We also have to do our own recess duty.

Holy moly! That's a ton of time away from students!

We all have brief morning duty (10 minutes for annoucements and stuff in the cafeteria) and lunch duty to some extent. But then we get our 30 minute duty free lunch too.

We are assigned morning duty 2-3 times a year. So that means we spend one entire week on duty for about 10 minutes each day.

We do not have lunch duty because the special education teachers (they don't have a morning or afternoon duty), administration and support staff members cover it.

We all have afterschool duty, every day for about 10-15 minutes.

We don't really do anything. Of course we watch our own children at recess. The PTO president and library assistant do lunch duty. The assistant principal does bus duty. The ESL teachers are holding the doors for the kids to go down the hall to breakfast. The counselor and librarian man the front for car riders. So us regular Pre-K-5th grade teachers don't do anything!

We have a 15 minute morning recess that is duty free, covered by the front office. Teachers have two 20 minute lunch recess duties each week; we all spend the first 20 minutes in our classrooms eating with our students.

Our prep time ranges from 60 to 120 minutes each day when the students are with specialist teachers.

WOW! It I cannot believe how everyone is different. My school we only have to do car/bus duty in the afternoon (which takes at most 15 minutes) Recess is up to each grade level. In Kdg we rotate so we only have it for 30 minute every third day. We have a 25 min duty free lunch. However our kids only have specials twice a week for 30 min. So we go some days with only our 25 minute lunch break. As for bathroom, the office and bathroom is right across the hall from me so I always prop my door open and go into the office and ask someone to watch my class

At my school classroom teachers have two 20 minute recess duties and one after school duty a week. Arkansas teachers can only have an hour of duty a week or they have to pay teachers for it.

At our school, the specialist teachers have morning duty and end of the day duty. Classroom teachers have lunch duty, lounge duty, and bus duty. Because we have such a large staff, it takes about 5 or 6 weeks for your turn to come up again. Generally, you only have those duties about 3 times a year. Unfortunately, they seem to come up about the same time.

Where are you in Washington, Melissa? I noticed you liked scrapbooking too (looked at your profile). I love to scrapbook but am very behind.
