what is normally your kids' DRA level before and after school year? I have a kindergartener who is reading N.
N is a guided reading level. That would be way above end of year expectations for kindergarten...slightly advanced for end of second. Was this child assessed using running record with a miscue analysis? Good comprehension? Just because a young child CAN read at advanced levels for his age doesnt mean he should. At level N and above, plot lines get more complex, there's more sophisticated vocab and there tend to be more mature 'problems' that K kids generally aren't best equipped for.
DRA levels are usually given as numbers. Fountas Pinnell uses letters and N would correlate to 28, but I would be curious about comprehension at that level before I commented.
I am curious about the comprehension as well. Did the child just retell the story? Or was the child answering questions beyond and about the text? I also wonder how well this child is in nonfiction texts. Has this student shown such reading strengths all year long or are you just noticing? What did this student enter K on?
We would like kids to come in at a 4, and leave at a 16 (I). However, we always have some kids who are below a 4 or higher than a 16 when they enter.
