Just curious how many have a SRO, and how often? My district (two buildings) has one that we share with two other districts. He's usually there a couple days a week and tries to rotate what time he's there at.
If you have a resource officer on a split schedule, it sounds wise that he doesn't have set hours, so "bad guys" will never know if he's there or not. I subbed in a couple of districts with uniformed part-time officers and non-uniformed full-time resource officers. The one time I was at a school with a lockdown, it was the non-uniformed officer who tackled a gunman after he fired a shot at someone in the bus garage. Still owe that man a bottle of wine.
We have two permanent, full-time police officers assigned to our campus. Some days there are more cops around, I guess because of rumors and rumblings and whatnot, but there are always at least the two.
Yes, all day. We also have additional police presence during rivalry week, Homecoming week, and the ends of semesters.
I probably should've included the question-what size school? We're a 7-12 school with about 300 students total.
Our district (K-8) used to have SROs at each of the middle schools. Additionally, we had one SRO for every two elementary sites. They fell by the wayside a few years ago when we started having budget issues. I believe the high school district has an officer at each site on a full-time basis.
We have one full time officer. He rotates through five buildings on one campus with approximately 1500 k-5 students.
We have one that we share with the high school. Our buildings are close to one another, so he's usually available with a quick phone call. Our building has about 500 students in grades 6-8.
The HS has a police officer assigned every day of the week - typically the same officer for the entire school year.
We have 3 schools at my campus and one is for the overage/under-credited. My school and the other "regular" school at my campus share 3 police officers everyday. The overage/undercredited school has their own police presence since they have lots of issues with fights, gambling, and smoking weed on the property.
Ours meets with students as needed. He helps to deal with students who may be a danger to others, and he is another pair of eyes and ears out there with the students. He also works to schedule the dog searches, etc.
Thanks. I have never heard the term Resource Officer. We just call them cops/police officer ... although, our students call them "The Boys."
The high school I attended had one full time resource officer. From what I remember, he was not in uniform with the exception of his gun and his badge, and had his own little office next to the principal's. His duties were similar to what geoteacher describes in the post above.
We have 1-2 a week every day. One of my other districts pretty much had a sub-station at one of the high school campuses.
