At all the schools I've either subbed at (for yrs) or been at permanently, the principals usually eat on their own time, which is completely understandable because they have varying schedules. But, I'm just wondering, do any of your principals ever eat lunch w/ your staff or do they stay tucked away in their office? Perhaps, they eat in the lounge when it's empty.

I think it's nice if they can do it at times because it shows that they're not acting like they're all high & mighty & can be down to earth w/ their staff.

Our administration eats lunch together at a table in the lunch room. When our principal is able to, he joins them. He is really strict about making sure that we are not asked to work during our lunch time, and similarly takes a break to eat each day.

Our principal often eats with groups of children on the patio outside the cafeteria or with teachers if they happen to be there.

My principal, like the other members of his religious order, lives upstairs. They go upstairs to eat. And they will stop into the faculty room for a cup of coffee and a bagel.

But other members of the adminstration who are lay people-- the Assistant Principal, the deans, the AP of Admissions, the Athletic Director-- they all eat in the faculty room with whoever happens to be free that period.

When they do miss lunch, it's not about being "high and mighty." It's about being busy running a school.

I've frequently seen the dean finally get down for lunch at 4 when I'm on my way out of the building.

Most of our front office staff (principal, ap, counselor, secretaries) does lunch duty so the teachers don't have to. They eat lunch together after the two lunch periods are over. They rotate one secretary/aide in to our lunches so that someone can cover the front office at all times.

I don't often see our principal eat either! I sometimes see her grabbing a quick bite at her desk sometime during the afternoon. During the lunch hour, the principal and vice-principal often have students with them, or they are helping with supervision in the halls and classrooms. When we have special potluck lunches during the year, they do come and sit down for at least a few minutes. I know that, at my school, the fact that they don't eat with staff has nothing to do with separation; it has to do with the fact that when all of the teachers are having lunch, they need to be even more visible and available.

Ours often will get a tray and sit down to eat with the students in the cafeteria-which I think is really cool!

I eat with a group of teachers in the cafeteria (yes, right in the middle of 200 HS students) and our P will sit at our table several times a week.

My P is VERY down to earth.

I eat in my room, sometimes with a colleague or two, sometimes with a few students: whoever drops by. I assume that my principal eats, but I have no idea when or where. If I had to guess based on her temperament, I would guess that she's an eat-at-yer-desker, like me. Perhaps she eats in the faculty room, a place I never go: I'm not much into the nuances of house insurance, the longevity of snowblowers, lame plagiarized jokes about Republicans, all that.

It's not a high and mighty issue in most cases...teachers 'unwind a bit' at lunch. Ps generally give teachers their space at that time. Plus there's a certain respect for contracts...teachers in my school are 'duty free' at lunch..Ps aren't.

    Wow, judgmental much?

At every school I've worked at, the administrators have lunch duty (watching the students) so that the teachers can have a duty-free lunch.

My last school where I subbed, the principal always had lunch in the faculty lounge with one of the math teachers. I usually was at the other table in the room with a couple of substitutes, but there was a lot of talking among both tables. I've rarely met a more approachable principal, especially when he brought in extra dessert from home.

Our principal roams the cafeteria during lunch to monitor the kids. She eats in her office with the secretary and a couple of teachers between the two lunch periods.

The last 4 principals at the high school have done a mixture - lunch duty, meetings with teachers and parents, go out to get a break, eat in the teacher's lounge, eat at their desks, not eat at all, work, work, work. I rarely saw any of them take more than a quick lunch. They are busy people. No snobbery, but when they go to the lounge, sometimes people stop talking - how would that make you feel? They deserve a comfortable break, too.

All members of our admin staff supervise the lunch area during lunchtime. They have lunch at a different time, but I don't know when.

Our P generally isn't available when we have lunch. She does come to the lounge a few times a year and will sit down and eat. She has this idea that staff eating in the lounge together shows that you have a really cohesive faculty. However, in my school most people work through lunch and eat in their rooms. There are 3-4 of us that will occasionally eat in the lounge (due to my sped schedule, I don't even have time for a lunch every day), but we're the only ones. She gets really excited when she sees people actually eating in there, haha. Sometimes she'll come chat for a minute or two and then joke about leaving so we can complain about the admin. At my mom's last school the P ate with them every day and they hated it. The P was new and had totally revamped the school and basically made everyone miserable, so they absolutely hated that they couldn't even have that 30 minutes a day of peace to be together without her.

I would love to eat with other adults everyday, but I simply do not have the time. I do not have a scheduled lunch; I eat when I can.

Sometimes I eat during lunch duty at a table with teachers right in the cafeteria. Sometimes it's in the lounge; sometimes its in my office.

My P eats with the students more than the teachers do. As in, every day. If he had the opportunity to eat in the lounge, where most of the teachers do, he would. And he'd be welcome, because we like him (most of the time!).

Our teachers eat at a table in the cafeteria with the students (the aides don't get there right away, so we have to supervise). The P usually eats with the upper grade teachers during the second lunch period, but he'll occasionally be busy and eat in his office.

I'm not sure where my principal eats now. I'm at a very large school and most grade levels eat lunch in different areas. My grade eats in the work room.

At my last school, my principal would do lunch duty every day. So he was always in the cafeteria with the kids. Every once in a while he would come in and eat lunch with us in the lounge though.

At my school we get an hour (duty-free) for lunch and those that live close by go home to eat. Some of us eat in our rooms but some eat in the teacher's lounge with the principal. We all have the same lunch break (some of the students go home for lunch and there is a cafeteria service that serves the food and watches over the students.

My old P would try to come in once or twice a week when he could to eat with us. My new P doesn't do this, but she does when we have staff carry-ins. I guess it just depends on the P.

I eat in my room most days. I do know that the P is in the lunchroom most days with the kids. I've seen him eating at his desk later in the day. He'll come to the teacher's lounge for teacher appreciation days and we'll eat together.

No, I have no clue where my principal eats. We have multiple faculty lounges. The English/History/Language teachers have one, and the math/science teachers have another. There's another faculty lounge near the cafeteria. Because there's so many lounges, it's hard to tell.

No. Our P, and 3 or 4 office staff( includes 1 certified staff member) sit in one of their offices (usually with the door locked-windows in doors) They often have take-out. Many times teachers have no break except lunch, and must ask a question, so it is awkward to "interrupt" them when something arises. They do no duty at lunch. Teachers do all of the lunch/recess duty. I eat in my room and work.

No because my P and the behavior specialist have lunch duty in the cafeteria everyday. The rest of the staff only have it once a week. Those two have to make sure at least one of them is in the cafeteria at all times. Occasionally one of them is busy handling something that has come up. I have seen my boss eat in her office at a later time.

We have a sub whose husband is a janitor at another school. She was telling us about a recent crisis at that school, involving a leaky roof, a broken pipe, and a soggy classroom. Her husband was frantically trying to broom off water from this roof, and falling behind. He turned around, and found the P, in his suit, climbing the ladder broom in hand. He spent the afternoon with the janitor, helping clean off water and the subsequent mess.

Definitely not high and mighty ;)

All of ours have eaten with the staff from time to time. They don't do it all the time. I haven't eaten with them at all this year because I don't take kids to lunch. We don't have a lounge, just a table in the cafeteria.

We used to have a superintendent who ate lunch with us at least once every couple of weeks. He visited at least one school every day. I really like his hands-on approach.

Earlier this year, on a Friday right at dismissal, a pipe broke in the upstairs bathroom. It of course, leaked downstairs. When I left, an hour later, the P and the Dean were mopping, trying to contain the water. I don't think the P had removed in suit jacket. I offered to help, but they sent me home.
