I don't understand :dunno: why the boy's bathroom always smells so bad at my school! Do little boys not know how to aim or something?! Just standing at the opening of the door nearly knocks me out -- the stench of urine is that strong.

How can the boys stand in?! If it was a choice between holding my own urine until the end of the day OR using the boy's restroom, I'd take my chances holding it!

I think because little boys especially don't aim...or they DO...and it's not necessarily where it SHOULD go.

It's like having a firehose at your disposal...a toy.

Years ago we had the same issue in a parochial school until they found out that the boys were peeing into the drain in the center of the bathroom (whose cover RESEMBLED like a archery target- were they giving points for accuracy?)...or sometimes having "pee-fights" where each OTHER was the play-target.

    ICK!

I'm in pre-school, mixed gender bathroom, it stinks even though it is cleaned almost every hour if not more often. Ugh, hate it in there and I'm usually in there for a while coz some of my little ones are still learning. I see them, and the bigger boys who stand and wee and turn whilst they wee and wee all over the floor or the toilet seat and they don't flush properly etc

At my previous school, the boys bathrooms reeked! I can only imagine what went on in there!!

I turn the lights on in the boys (and girls) bathroom of a morning and the smell gags me. Our janitors do an excellent job cleaning and use bleach to clean, but the urine smell just doesn't seem to go away. What is up with being unable to aim?

Yuck, it grosses me out to even walk by the boys' RR! It's like the urine has permeated the concrete walls...

You know... not to turn this thread... but why do I walk into the bathrooms at elementary schools and find stall after stall unflushed?

Moms who flush FOR kids not telling them that by the time THEY go to school it's their responsibility?

Forgetful kids? (Aren't THEY grossed out when they come into the bathroom and find others doing the same?)

What is it? .. and I WISH it was a rarity...but it's not! (I can't be the ONLY lucky one to have found this a pattern.)

Maybe it's that they're so excited to get back to class, they don't want to take the 2 seconds?

This mom sure as heck doesn't do any flushing for anyone but myself. Blech! I know it's my kid, but I can't stand going in the bathroom after someone does their business!

We have the same thing happen at our school too McKenna. OK-gross out coming-do you ever judge the age of the kid by the size of the deposit? Not that that is always very accurate!

I'm glad this is a problem in other schools! I have never experienced such a terrible stench in other schools! We have never had the problem until this year...but our boys bathroom is terrible!!! My classroom bathroom is has the same problem.

I teach 5th grade, and I hate walking into the girls bathroom and it is unflushed. My DH tells me that they are proud of their accomplishment and want to show it off.
I find it disgusting. I won't go in there unless I have to-the teacher's bathroom is on the other side of the building.
And Teacher_Lyn, the boy's bathroom in both the primary and intermediate hallways smell disgusting.

Number 1, kids don't flush because their parents don't make them. 2, boys wet all over everything because they can. Who among us has the time or opportunity--or stomach!--to check behind each one! 3, our boys' room reeks, and the only thing that helps is Clorox, but the custodians say they can only use it in the afternoons after the kids are gone. If they could use Clorox during the day, it would help. I've had boys before that I wanted to put in the boys' bathroom for time-out, but I was afraid it would be child abuse!

My mentoring teacher - 5th grade - would say that quickly in the year he would find SOMETHING for the girls to do elsewhere and then take the boys on a field trip to the bathroom..and tell them "No more baby boy crap! You pee IN the urinal, You FLUSH, and you don't play with it like it's a toy! Do your business like a MAN and get out of the bathroom! If I have ANY problems in this bathroom i will NOT hesitate to discuss this problem with you men IN FRONT of your female classmates...and i won't be gentle about it. You WILL be embarrassed! now, any questions?...ok. Let's go." He would leave to go and then turn around and say... "and you aren't babies anymore. Your mommy isn't here to wipe your butts. DO IT YOURSELF, and DO IT WELL!... and for goodness sakes... you are getting older- you are gassing the girls out...get some deodorant. It smells like a zoo in here!"

I loved this guy. There was no wishy-washy (or ignorant) boy, or pre-slutty (or stupidly naive) girl going to enter 6th grade on HIS watch!

(I try this with my son... his dad/my ex is too busy elsewhere being a child again.... but i always end up breaking a smile.)

Somehow, I think it's mostly women posting on this thread ;)

    You're just jealous :D

In my elem school the urinal pucks had targets on them. Some of them even did have point values.

    Oh yes, very stinky!

No offense here men, but (adult) men's bathrooms in general at public places just smell bad! The main fact is that they have to aim in the right spot or else it goes elsewhere where it doesn't get flushed, so that urine scent is just embedded in everything. I used to work at a fast food place after graduating from HS & we all had to clean the restrooms as part of the job. It's just horrible, plus there's been many times I'm sure we've all passed by the men's restroom when someone had the door open from entering or exiting & you can just smell this strong whiff of urine!

I guess if there were VERY strong air fresheners to mask the odor or unless the restrooms were cleaned every hour, it may be alright, but I guess it's just one of those things.

When I was a janitor during college I never notice a smell in a men's room but the ladies' room smelled!
    Maybe it is the pheromones.

What I found in the ladies room, well I will not describe it here, yes there were messes in the men's room but there was more to clean & more trash to dump in a ladies' room. [IMG]

Yay! My boys BR doesn't smell bad. I'm sorry that all of yours does. Come to think on it, it stopped smelling bad once they put a good coat of paint on the walls. We had some of the foulest graffiti. Think volume and you'll understand. I'd bet that janitors rarely if ever wash the walls and other vertical surfaces.

I have a bathroom in my classroom and I can say it smells. I go in there open the window and spray with lysol. It smells b/c the boys CAN NOT AIM and there is a puddle on the floor.

Really - my BF has his own problems aiming, so I can't imagine a bathroom that 100's of little boys use every day.

It's not too bad. No worse than the one at the Sacramento Amtrak station.

My neighbor and I share the bathrooms...I never step foot in the boys bathroom unless it's to pull a misbehaving student out of it! I swear the janitors use a gallon of bleach in there because you can smell it all the way to the hallway!

Funny thing is, even though we share, I'm always the one getting in trouble for it with the janitors. Hey, my kids aren't the only ones in there!

Ours doesn't this year... we have an awesome custodian. We have more of a problem w/ boys etching naughty words on the doors.

Those of you who teach elementary, do you have RR monitors?

I think the young ones 1)have trouble aiming (they can't even walk down the hallway and look ahead, always behind, can you imagine what they are doing in the bathroom???) and 2) they play around with the toy, and the older boys 1) play around, and 2) play around.

We have a small school and as soon as there is a problem kids have to start being escorted to the bathroom or go with a partner. They hate this so the problem clears up quickly.

I don't think our boys' room smells. But I do think with enough "spills" that the urine starts getting into the linoleum/vinyl around the bottom of the toilet and seeping into the wood. That brings the constant smell. ick.

Our girls also have the no flushing problem! They just have a short attention span. sheesh.

I like the idea of targets in the urinals!

Yes Dave, I can imagine how you might find the girls' bathroom. There are just some general hygiene issues that are no longer addressed at home and teachers are not willing, sometimes, to address the issues. When I taught jr. high and high school, I addressed all of it. I would do it now if someone would let me. You are doing kids a favor to speak bluntly of hygiene issues.

Had a four year old that would just stand at the bathroom, leaning back and aiming for the handle and the back wall. I walked in and had a fit! I told him to hold it down and lean forward OR he will be cleaning the wall every time he did it. My team teacher found him peeing into the drain hole. He's done it at the walls on the sides too. Every time he asks to go to the bathroom, I make sure he does it right. What made it worse was he'd laugh about what he was doing. Come to find out, he does it at home and at his friends' homes too. He needs a nice butt whooping, especially if he's doing it everywhere and thinks it's funny.:help:
