Some schools teach crisis mangement classses like CPI, Handle With Care, etc. In these classes they often teach physical skills like the small child restraint, basket hold, PRT, etc. For those who have had this kind of training, what physical skills did they teach and do they work, or are they just legal protection so the district can claim they had properly trained staff?

It's been awhile since I was CPI-certified, but I would say that they both work and are legal protection. When a student is becoming aggressive or demonstrating self-harm, a physical restraint can keep the student and others safe. By using a proper restraint, as opposed to just restraining the student in some random way, the district is protecting themselves legally.
