I haven't been able to travel much since 2002--I've been single since then. But I've been to 42 states and 12 countries. I have been blessed! Israel, Russia, Ukraine, and England (London) were especially great, as was Toronto!
Country-wise, I've been to Egypt (study abroad), Italy, Turkey, Bulgaria, Canada (just Victoria), and Mexico twice (have family there). I have also been to Heathrow, if that counts as the UK . I'd love to visit more. As for states, I haven't counted but I've probably been to about half of them, although in some cases it would depend on what constitutes a visit. Last summer I took a mammoth trip by Amtrak so that I could meet my family for vacation, then go on to visit college friends. I went from eastern Washington state (nearest station to me) through Chicago to New Orleans, then a few days later back to Chicago where I stayed with one friend, then to Massachusetts to stay with another, than all the way back home. I had to "sleep" in my seat multiple nights in a row, so by the time I got home my mood was...interesting...but I'm glad I did it. Interestingly, there were tons of Europeans on the train. For example, on various legs of the trip I met two British women, and a Macedonian girl who was going to the North Dakota oil fields to work at Applebee's for the summer.
I love to travel but dont get the chance as much as i would like..... although i am from england and now live in the US so I do get to travel to England every summer! I want to see more of europe .... and other parts of the usa.
Unless our job itself involves traveling or we work a very sparse schedule, I think teaching is the profession to be able to do more traveling than the average person. What other regular job gives us a total of about a month of holidays off during the school year & about 2 mos off during the summer? (Well, I'm sure there's a few other types of jobs.) Plus, with my personal day/hour schedule, I'm never letting my job go!
Completely agree!!! I keep trying to convince my novio to go into teaching so we can take month long trips together! I doubt that will ever happen though...
I wanted to get a motorcycle so I proposed a travel article to a motorcycle magazine. We write for about 10 different magazines now. Leisure, kayak and motorcycle magazines. We also have a book out. None of it pays well, but it's really fun.
Yeah, while I'm super happy that hubby has a job that he enjoys (he's a programmer basically for the oil industry), I do wish that he had gone into teaching just so we could travel more often!! He WAS in a single subject teaching credential program for math where he was almost done when he was hired for this job. Oh well.... That's just the selfish part of me talking there...
Traveling is a tremendous benefit to a teacher. Anything seen, experienced, and learned while traveling can be translated in the classroom. Wish I had an RV so I could travel more throughout the country. Airports and airplanes have become a hassle and much of the fun has been taken away.
That's awesome, though! I think if it's fun and you are doing what you love, then it's totally worth it!
