I usually have quiet time at the beginning of the year for 20 min but I've never had anyone fall asleep so I end up just having them look at books quietly. Do you have rest time? If so, when? How long?

My kids had a 15-20 minute rest time. After lunch, they come back in and put their heads down. A para is in there. I come in after about another 5 minutes. As the year came to an end, our rest time ended earlier and earlier. After everyone rested for 5-10 minutes, I would read Junie B Jones from the carpet. It was optional to come to the carpet and listen, or keep their head down on their desk.

I want to add that because its full day K now (as of 2012-13 school year) we are supposed to give at least a 20 min rest/quiet time after lunch...lights out, heads down. When we were half day K district wide we never had quiet, rest or any other down time!

Nope. We don't have nap or rest time. Usually they adapt pretty well-there are always a few who will fall asleep during class the first week though.

Nap time is usually Pre-K here in NYC (and I'm assuming other states). Most kindergarten classes I subbed, it's a 15-20 minute rest time after lunch. They'd quietly go to their seats and put their heads down with lights off. I'm planning on doing that with my kindergarten class. I might put some soft music during that time if it helps (obviously I can't have them fall asleep!)

No nap time here, not even in preK4 classes.

We don't have a nap or rest time. At best I can give the class a quiet time for 10-15 minutes after the after lunch read aloud.

We have 45 minutes for nap at the beginning of the year and it gradually goes down to about 30. Every year, the majority of my class has always slept.

I put on quiet music and they rest for about 20 minutes. Usually about half way through the year I let them start looking at books from their book boxes. I feel like they really need that time to relax and get ready for the second half of the day.

At my first school, the kids did not rest well. We ended up fading out rest time during the second half of the year. That is when I learned that it really depends on the group of kids that you have. You have to be able to read your kids and judge whether or not it is a good use of their time. If it's more of a management problem, then it's not worth it.

    Thank you for the replies!

What do you have your students red on? Do you have them bring something from home ?

I do a 20 min rest time. Light off, quiet music on and heads down. I call their tables to get water after lunch during this time too.

So after working in my kindergarten class for a week, I only am able to give my kids a 5-10 rest time. The ELA curriculum we have is very rigorous and I happen to have to teach ELA the last 3 periods after lunch.

    Crazy…

But it does calm them down a bit after lunch.
