I was just reading through some of the minutes from board meetings over the past year, and it's pretty interesting actually. Do you ever go to the meetings? Is it encouraged for teachers to be there?

Our union has teachers sign up so all board meetings are covered for the year. I read all the minutes.

So do you have to say anything on behalf of the teachers in the meeting, or do you just observe?

I read all the minutes, and attend meetings occassionally depending on what is being discussed. Agendas are posted in advance.

Just observe...no one in the audience can speak until the floor is opened to 'comments from the public...usually best not to say anything...the supe will acknowledge teachers who go...we just smile and nod.

No I don't go. I don't know how to access the minutes, but I'm sure I could. Our principal usually shares any info we need at staff meetings.

No, but one of my teammates does and she will tell us about it the next day...she thinks they're really interesting. I like that I get the info without having to sit through them!

It is encouraged, but I rarely go because of my second job. The minutes are very hard to come by, so I rarely have the opportunity to read them.

Yes, I do. It helps me to see the lay of the political landscape.

    This.
I also read the agenda before going and if there's anything I might be really interested in, I'll go.

At my last school the meetings were during the school day. Should have been ILLEGAL! So, obviously, I never attended one in my six years there. Even the minutes were not readily available...never saw them posted, published, or emailed once.

I have been to a couple of board meetings at my current school when I worked here previously. One was to support a program they wanted to stop funding and another was to be be recognized for something. But I read their minutes every month because it's where I live and where my siblings go to school.

I haven't gone yet, but I may at some point. I do read the minutes, though. The director e-mails them to us. I'm at a charter and we get the minutes for every board and committee meeting. I really appreciate that because everyone is kept in the loop.

There is no school board in NYC. The mayor is in control of the schools and it will be that way until at least 2015 I believe.

Our board meets when we are at work, So there are only 2-3 opportunities a year to go. Well you could be "sick" which is risky cause you have to sign in or you can take a PB day. Meetings are recorded and an edited version is played on public access TV on Saturdays.

The mayor is in charge here too. We have a "board" full of his appointed people. They do what he wants. They hardly listen to problems raised. There is a grassroots movement for an elected school board.

I wasn't around the last time we had an actual school board so I'm not sure how much of a difference it made. I think just having a new mayor will be a nice change since the one we have now has been around a little too long imo.

I also don't remember having an elected board. Our mayor has been around a year and it has already been too long.

Yeah, when it gets to where he feels he has the right to regulate your soda, maybe it's time to turn to someone new, kwim???

Um I know we're not supposed to discuss politics, but just google Mayor Bloomberg and breastfeeding because it gets way worse!

I don't go to meetings, but I do read the minutes. They are emailed to us the day after a board meeting, so it's nice not to have to search for them.

Absolutely! I try to attend when possible (or I watch the video). If I can't do either of those, I'll read minutes (but sometimes our minutes aren't posted for a few months).

I have attended before, but not regularly. Our district sends out a copy of the minutes monthly. I always read them.

When teachers go, they write notes on the agenda and leave in faculty room.

I have attended BOE meetings in the past if the discussion related to something directly involving me. I almost always read the agendas and minutes, though, just so I'm informed with what's happening in the district.

At our small school, we each sign up for a month to attend the meeting. We give a little 'report' about something going on at school or in our classrooms. They usually ask us if there is anything that we need/would like to have--we think very carefully about those requests! Then we share the information at faculty devotions the next morning.
