I was wondering if teachers smoke marijuana in the public school system/if school systems are stringent on drug testing, and if so how they keep with their career.

I'm not talking about toking and going to work, but teachers who reserve their time on weekends perhaps to do that in private instead of, let's say, drinking and going to a club.

It's not worth the risk, in my opinion. I personally don't know any teachers that do, but I've heard some stories.

Sorry. The teachers I know do not smoke. Neither do I. It really isn't worth the risk of my job to be around people who do.
I know that some people who smoke believe they can be fully functional high but it isn't true. Total misconception often expressed by the smoker. Of course it affects you. Smoking on the weekends and thinking you are in top form to teach on a Monday is some cloudy thinking.:2cents:
Although my district does not do drug testing, there is a process principals need to go through to have suspicious teacher behavior evaluated. They can order you to see a doctor and have results sent to them. Not worth it to me.

    Do you? Just wondering.:D
I don't and I hope teachers who are really into their careers are not doing it. Anybody in their right frame of mind shouldn't be smoking the stuff. It is not a good choice. What a waste of mind, money & time!:(

I know a fantastic teacher who enjoys partaking every once in a while. Never while teaching. Perhaps she gets her great ideas while high. Who knows? But I would trust her with my kids in a heartbeat. (no judgement, please)

I know someone that does too. She has my utmost respect as a teacher. My son had her for a pull out class. In fact if I could be half the teacher she is one day I would be an amazing teacher.

Well, if I found out a fellow teacher was smoking marijuana I probably wouldn't say anything about it to them. On the other hand, I wouldn't feel the least bit sorry for them if they were caught and had to suffer the consequences. It IS illegal.

I personally don't... but know several teachers who do. Maybe it's not as "bad" as getting wasted or doing coke, but TeacherNY is right - it's still illegal and teachers are supposed to set an example. Whether we like it or not.

Me, too, Becky. I'm sure, what would someone say? "Wha? Yeah, man, I'm smoking a biggie right now!" Good grief.

For real! And I wouldn't, as a teacher, talk about any fellow teachers that do smoke weed. No offense to anyone who has said they know someone who does, but it paints a bleak picture of what type of person might enter teaching, kwim?

We get trolls over at Homeschoolspot all the time, and it usually ends up being kids with too much time on their hands.
For the op of this thread, thay had zero posts. Why make this subject the subject of your first post?

Because you're in high school and want to justify your own pot use by going online and trying to unearth teachers who admit using it themselves.

My guess is yes to the troll thing...and I would never ever smoke that. I would never put my career in jeopardy. Ever.

Thank you so much for the thoughtful answers - from some of you. To the other teachers who have judged me to be a troll, I'd just love to say thank you for judging an honest question and discounting me as any less than any of the other posters. It's good to know that teachers know how to really take a look at someone before making a judgment call.

It couldn't possibly be that I am a college student with a genuine interest in teaching. God forbid. It would make no sense for me to be a member of this forum prior to my interest in teaching, so if I were to ask a career related question I must be a person who is in high school.

I can't wait to meet peers like you guys. what a profession...

Anon it is quite easy to be judgemental since you pose one of the most unusual first questions I have seen since I first started posting on here much less any board I have ever posted on.:eek:hmy:

First thing you do is ask a question that is controversial,
then you have zip on your profile, you gave us nothing to look at!
You haven't posted on the Introductions thread, you did not say you were a college student interested in teaching. Just wham bam thank you ma'am you ask the question.:woot:

What do you really think we would do? :dizzy:

I don't. I don't know any who do but I am sure some do on their free time.

Most districts these days are doing drug tests upon hiring aren't they?

Do this thing myself? No. Know anyone who teaches that does? No. Know people that do? Yes. Some of them are great people and others I stay away from. The morality of this topic is so many shades of gray. Anyone can take a stand saying, "Those people are bad or dumb. It's illegal." Those do not necessarily follow one another logically.

As others have stated, I'm sure that some teachers do all manner of things that are detrimental to their careers, themselves personally, and to the children they put themselves in front of day to day. just look at the news. Teachers are people, it's that simple.

I agree that the consequences are ever present and too destructive. I couldn't imagine going into work on Monday with any kind of hangover. I can hardly stand to go in sleep deprived or even slightly ill.

Consequences aside, I simply have no interest. I'm sure there are at least some posters here that don't do it not just because of what the consequences would be but because they have no desire to try it.

    Anon,please.

I'm part of a homeschool board, and we get trolls that do this all the time. We get trolls posing as hs kids whose parents don't understand them, we get trolls posing as dads wanting to 'research' for their wives, you name it, we've had it. Most, if not all, start with some controversial question. Most, if not all, continue with outrageous posts that are tempered with a slant that feeds the attitudes of the ladies on the board. For example, one 'misunderstood hs teen' posted a link to Bible stories made with legos. Well, the scenes were pornographic. All the women on the board at first were impressed with this kid, but he turned out to be a simple teen with too much time on his hands.
You behaved like a troll, pure and simple.
