I'm a new 3rd grade teacher and I'm working on creating my discipline policy. I originially thought I would do a traffic light system, but now I'm wondering if that is too "young" for 3rd graders. I've thought about doing a card pulling system and I'm looking for some ideas for how I would do that. I student taught in a 4th grade classroom and my supervising teacher had one. However, I did NOT like how she incoporated it. I felt like we were constantly pulling cards and not having true accountability with the students. They would get "bucks" depending on how many cards they had left and then could use their bucks at the "auction" at the end of the quarter. Therefore, they wouldn't really face any consequences until the end of the quarter at auction time. So really, the students didn't have an immediate consequence and lost track of how many cards they lost. And once they ran out of cards b/c of their behavior they no longer cared about their behavior. Does anybody use a card system that has more immediate accountability? Maybe a daily, weekly, etc. type of a system?
