First ever Colonoscopy next week. I received very limited details about what is okay to eat/drink the 1 or 2 days before a colonoscopy from the nurse who scheduled my appointment.

I pick up the "prep" drink this weekend from the pharmacist and hope to get more info then.

Info online is conflicting ... one site says to avoid certain items, another site has a different list.

I know liquid/soft is okay, but no color dyes ... so, what does that allow?

I had my first this summer. I don't remember much, but I think there were restrictions for more than 2 days. The prep drink had all the instructions though.

ETA: I couldn't eat anything the day before except clear or transparent food, like jello, broth, etc., if I remember correctly.

My mom was told to eat just chicken broth before her test. They also told her she could have jello as long as it wasn't red (resembles blood) so she ate green(I think!). The doctor gave her a list of things that she could not eat and any medications she could not take.

Mix the miralax with very, very cold Gatorade and drink it through a straw rather than drinking from a glass. Do not wander far from the "throne room" once you begin. On the day of the procedure once the sedative takes affect it seems as if you are waking up and it is over.

I had my first this summer and it really was not bad at all. If I remember correctly, no seeds or nuts three days before. No red meat two days before. On your prep day, only clear liquids allowed (such as broth). I think people make the prep day out to seem so bad, but it really wasn't anything at all for me. Just some bad stomach cramps for a while was the worst of it. Stay home and rest. :)

And just to alleviate some concerns, after you wake up you will probably feel normal. I had pizza within an hour of being released. :)

Word of advice... on the "prep" day. Keep a clean and short path to the toilet. Vaseline will be your best friend. Apply before and after using the toilet to keep your butt from burning like fire. TMI, I know but been there, done that, learned a lesson!

My brother had to do one a year or two ago when he was having GI issues.

For the day before, he ate broth and light colored things.

Then he had to drink the horrid drink in the timespan of an hour. It smelled absolutely putrid, and apparently tasted much worse.

And just get ready to be cleaned out.

Stick with what the dr recommends. Clear broth, Gatorade, Apple juice....wonton soup or chicken noodle soup strained so you only drink the broth is tasty.
I started eating more lightly a day or two ahead.

    Don't be scared.
It's only one day..this is a test that can save your life.

I've had several. Do plan to stay near the bathroom for the prep period. Drink the prep through a straw rather than sipping. They won't tell you this, but sucking lemon drop between drinks can really help to cut the taste. A man who was having the test the first tine I did told he about this.

I second the straw to drink the prep mix; that way you don't taste it as much. Also, I had to drink some the day before and the morning of the procedure, and the the second time was much better because it was much colder.

The whole thing is no big deal; you walk out, I took a nap, and then ate regularly.

Talk to the pharmacist. He/she will be able to advise you as to which flavor is the best and how long to chill it. I agree with the straw idea. Don't sip, chug. I never heard of the lemon drops before, but I will definitely remember that one!

I always try to eat more fiber the week before. I usually struggle with that.

In addition to the short & clear path to the bathroom, make sure that when you feel the urge you go or you may not make it. I also advise pants that easily pull down, no belts, zippers or drawstrings.

The last time I had it done I was so cold! Started shortly after I started drinking, didn't end until I started eating again. I don't remember being that cold the other times.

Good luck! IMHO it's drinking the stuff that's the worst part.

    Thanks, everyone.
I picked up my prep drink today. The size of the "jug" is a little disconcerting, but otherwise I guess I am not terribly worried about the prep or the procedure.

I am worried about the results. My symptoms are scary.

But, I am glad to be getting on the road to knowing what is going on.

ku, I had one Wednesday. I like the way my doctor does it. Sunday and Monday, I could not eat fruits and vegetables. I could eat meat if it wasn't deep fried. I couldn't eat nuts, multi-grains, or brown rice. I took Dulcolax tablets for three nights. I started clear liquids the day before procedure and I had to drink bottles of magnesium citrate at 4pm, 7pm, and 4am. This was so much better than the gallon of drink. I didn't go the bathroom nearly as much as I did with the other prep. I had the gallon drink for my last one and it made me very sick. I know the feeling about being worried about the results. I was diagnosed with colon cancer in October, 2010. I had a colonoscopy one year later and then two years later. The doctor told me that I can now go three years for my next one. I pray that all goes well for you and if there is anything that I can do to help you, please let me know.

I think I could do jell-o, popsicles, and juice while doing the prep, but nothing with red dye.

Before my 2nd one I had to go on a special diet 5 days prior. Apparently I wasn't cleaned out enough the first time, even though I followed my doctor's directions.

    Great advice!

I would like to add that I used personal wipes instead of toilet paper. That really helped with discomfort.

    Done with the prep.
    It wasn't bad at all.
I have to report to the hospital at 6am.
Fingers crossed that my report is about something manageable.

The procedure was a real cake walk. Easy-peasy.

Probable diagnosis is a somewhat common gastro issue, a tissue sample and blood sample will confirm.

    Nothing indicated cancer. YAY!
